When TF2 first came out it was shit on by fans of TFC because it was too casual. Things like the roof ontop of the bridge in 2fort and the staircases leading to the intel. Random crits were added so that new players could at least get some kills if they just started the game.

Valve said they added a lot of more casual elements so that games wouldn't be as frustrating to players. People more or less didn't mind this since it was still a very well designed game that was very balanced (at the time)

Then Valve started adding unlocks. This didn't become a problem til Valve started to treat TF2 like a dumping ground for their ideas on how to make money. A lot of aspects of Steam were inspired by how the community reacted to changes to TF2. And Valve almost started to treat the community like a large guinea pig. Like they added an unlock that required you to view a website and be one of the first 11,111 people to visit it. And people raged endlessly about how they didn't get their unlock. And it was just a pointless Soldier badge. If you told people this at the time it would've been seen as weird that people cared so much about pointless unlocks but Valve took notice.

Then they started to add crates because people cheated the drop system Valve put in place. So Valve elected to kill the economy they already created with one they could directly control by people spending actual money. This could also be seen as extremely manipulative since you get crates and get told what's already in them but have to spend money to open them.

TF2 always feels like a massive social experiment on how to just bleed people dry of more and more money and less like an actual first person shooter. It was a pretty solid game when it originally released but now is just a bloated husk that almost nobody I know thinks fondly about playing nowadays.
