Why did no one play Tekken 4-6, but now everyone is playing Tekken

It's been such a drought of 3D fighters, when Tekken 4-6 were happening Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter, and DOA were still around. I enjoyed Tekken but enjoyed the other franchises more, but now that they're all dead I'm happy that there's a new 3D fighter to play

Fighting games came back in 2009.

Aris said something on his stream about this that I really agree with. Most of the other fighters out right now are crap. They aren't exciting to watch at a high level because of how accessible they all are. The difference between an ok player and a great player in something like SFV is pretty minimal. Tekken 7 didn't sacrifice it's difficulty to make it more accessible. You can really tell when someone is good at the game just by the way they are moving around and punishing the other player.
The game is difficult and in an age where every other fighting game wants to hold your hand, Tekken 7 pretty much throws you right in and forces the player to learn everything themselves. Makes the game more engaging and interesting, and since the game itself lacks so much information, the FGC is forced to play and talk about the game to gain that information. As a result, people who like old school fighters that had that element of discovery to them, which is most of the FGC, are gravitating towards Tekken 7. It wasn't until recently that fighting games started to hold the players hand so Tekken 7 releasing in an era of baby fighting games makes it stand out.

I dunno, I hadn't played Tekken since 3, I watched a couple gameplay videos and for some reason I bought it, and I like it.
I keep hearing/reading the comparison to Tekken 3 which I honestly don't know because I skipped 4-6 and the Tag games so I have no idea how much those differ from 3 and 7.

T6 and TTT2 didn't sell well (or as well as is standard for this series, T6 sold 3 mil at least) because with the advent of online people realized just how hard to master Tekken is despite being much easier to pick up than Street Fighter. Being a 3D fighter, the depth in movement and positioning shoots way up, while knowing the right punish combos is tough while individual execution of each part might be easy. Online exposed people who thought they were great among their casual friends but get destroyed online.

At a time where people perceive SFV as watered down (I don't think so, I personally think streamlining execution only shows the flaw in 2D fighters), a game like Tekken 7 that offers very easy to pick up but very hard to master just seems to appeal to everyone.

They don't get a whole lot of exploration because they're not allowed in tournaments, but there are a lot of great items with some really dirty shit.

I remember the tonfas, which every character could equip, were dirty as fuck in TTT2.
