Anybody play this game? Heard it's an underappreciated gem.

Better than Half-Life 1
>>
It's not better, but it's a properly fun shooter. Sadly it didn't get the shine it deserved and was riddled with bugs at release, and overshadowed by Half-Life.
It's still a fun game, with some really good level design and solid shootan.
>>
Yep all the Sin games were awesome as fuck. Total classic FPS games from their era along with FEAR 1.
>>
most gems are underappreciated. especially here.
>>
It was the next (and perhaps final) step in the evolution of Duke Nukem 3D-esque shooters with tons of environmental interaction and character banter with tons of shit you can find and do.
While you're still riding around the train in HL1 you've already blown up a bank with a helicopter-mounted chaingun in this, stole quarters out of a wishing well to call the devs, hacked the bank's account system and transferred the main antagonist's money onto your own account and punched female hostages in the tits for a nip-slip.
>>
>>379408876
Biggest issue (and what killed it back in the 90s) was how incredibly buggy it was due to it being rushed to compete with HL1.
Loading a level took minutes, the first boss wouldn't move, the game would become essentially unwinnable in the stealth mission if you skipped the cutscene at the start, items would have no use and much more.
Thankfully it was all patched but the damage was done.
>>
>>379407180
one of my favourite shooters.
shits on meme-life, but was sadly overshadowed by it.
I miss ritual entertainment.
>>
The game also had location based damage and you could shoot weapons out of enemies' hands. This should be basic stuff that sadly doesn't exist in modern day shooters.
>>
ROCK THE CASBAH
>>
Started strong but the steam ran out after a few levels. The forced stealth section without any meaningful stealth mechanics was pure cancer. Overall it was fun for its time but definitely not on par with Half Life 1
>>
it was pretty gory
I remember you could shoot enemies and they would get these huge bloody entry/exit wounds depending on where you hit them. If you headshot them with the pistol, they would be able to survive the damage sometimes and would keep fighting you with a gaping bloody hole in their head
>>
>>379409190
>Biggest issue (and what killed it back in the 90s) was how incredibly buggy it was due to it being rushed to compete with HL1.
That's not true. It had some bugs here and there like enemies just standing there a couple of times, but nothing game breakingly severe at least for me. I played through it without problems in 1998 (still own the big cardboard box to this day).
It just came out at the wrong time when everyone and his son already jumped on the Half-Life cock sucking train, like every video game blogger has done so with BotW these days because everything else would have looked as tryhard contrarian.

I remember how I used to play games like Duke 3D and SiN and thinking to myself/dreaming about how insanely intearctive and full to the brim with details future games will be. Heh.
Kids these days actually want less of it. At least that's my impression. They would rather watch let's play than play the fucking games themselves. I don't even know where everything went so horribly wrong.
It's like some accident at CERN happened and threw us all into a fucked up parallel universe.

I wouldn't have such a problem with today's hallway shooters if there was an alternative. The problem is the alternative is autism-sims like ARMA or Squad and I just can't get into those either. I'd love to play an fps these days, but man there is nothing.

I won't argue with it. It's often the case that a game runs ok for some players, while for others it becomes unplayable for whatever reason.
I'm just saying that I could play through the game just fine in 1998 without a single patch.
>>
>>379411218
Still one of the most satisfying pistols ever. It's just so fucking chunky.
>>
>>379407180
I keep meaning to check this game out. Come to think of it, didn't it get some kind of remake or sequel that no one liked?
>>
>>379411473
A lot of the weapons were.
Remember that (for its time) overly complex expanding animation of the sniper rifle?
That was some of the coolest shit I've seen back then.
>>
>>379410952
Isn't nu-Shadow Warrior 1/2 a little better? I heard they were a bit more old-school in their design. I'm sure they're still a far cry from the 3D Realms title
>>
>>379409883
fuck you. I was there at launch. I was hooked to the demo version of SiN. I got the final game from the store. It was buggy, slow and the worst of all, it gave me my first BSOD. I took it back to the store and replaced my copy with Half-Life. it was the best decision of my life.

Sin was a solid FPS, but wasn't Sin: Episodes one of the first attempts to push the episodic vidya cancer?
>>
i remember barely running it on my old like p166, it was the coolest game out at the time, i only had the demo.

I think even unreal ran better than this even though it was quake 2 engine. I remember the demo started with you shooting people from a chopper in first person was pretty rad at the time. Nothing will ever beat that unreal intro though. I had a voodoo 1 at the time.

Shit, meant to say Ritual there of course.
>>

What was even cooler in the chopper section was the outcome would change on certain conditions, I can't remember if it was how much damage you took or if you blew up certain parts of the building but I distinctly remember you would either land on the roof or outside the front entrance.

That's just the thing the young ones don't really understand.
It's not that oldfags enjoy their jaded cynicism -not much, anyway-; it's that they played amazing games in their time, and used to dream of how even more amazing things could become once computers became more powerful, and then it all kind of... ended up like this.

I hate Doomfags and Quakefags that act like that. They are fucking cancer.

I mean Doom and Quake are good games, but no they are not the best the FPS genre had to offer. The Build engine shooters are better than anything Id ever did.
>>
>>379416071

I am on Windows 7 too. It still works, you just have to download it the old way from GoG's website and use the manual installer. It just doesn't work with GoG Galaxy. Which is a shame, because I have this on Steam too and the steam version works like fucking garbage. The GoG release is much better. I just wish they would fix this glitch with the Galaxy installer.

Honestly? I think Dook 3D is the best FPS ever made, hands down.

I think I'm a minority though...
>>
>>379416480

I really enjoyed Shadow Warrior 1997. Fuck I love the aesthetics and level design in that game. But the only problem is sometimes the level design can just be uninspiring and shit, and other times it can be fucking god tier. But playing SW 1997 with all the expansions now there is a fuckload of content and I think I burnt myself out on it when I played through last time. But going back and playing a few of the good eps to show a friend and I was just thinking how much better it feels to play than Doom or Quake (which I've been playing recently).

I always just thought my PC was slow at the time, but then I replayed the game a couple years ago and it was STILL slow despite using a modern rig.

It was like the engine was bottlenecking itself hard and you can't simply bruteforce 1-2s load times given its age.

From what I recall it wasn't like some evil publisher shut down the project despite making a profit, Episode 1 was self funded but it pretty much bankrupt them and so they had to sell the company. The new owners had no interest in their previous work, they just wanted a development studio they could use for their own stuff. Apparently most of the devs jumped ship after the buyout anyway so the studio was pretty much dead.
>>
>>379421293
It didn't bankrupt them. It just literally didn't make enough profit to warrant investing more back into it. But the project did break well above even.

Gameplay is less interesting than say Doom but most other things such as visuals, in both quality and variety, and music are better. It even has storytelling and puzzles. Worst thing about the game is just that some of the weapons suck and there are some extremely annoying flying enemies that luckily go down pretty fast. It has some secrets but they kind of suck. It's mostly just escorting non hostile npcs so that they'll open a wall for you or crawling through a dark tunnel to grab some ammo and flares at the end. There are also quite a few platforming segments that are relatively fun.

The only real dumb part from reading that is how the OpenGL renderer was implemented. Cheated physics were expected because the game needed to run on a 200mhz pentium at the time. Other stuff seems rather minimal given the time of the game.
>>
>>379423175
>tl;dr goldsource actually sucks like anything Valve does

Honestly, reading through that page it seems to be less a case of Valve sucks and more a case of "This shit is all woefully old techniques that don't work well anymore and your typical mish-mash of get it working patches and undocumented code that is difficult to maintain." It's easy to judge in hindsight but you have to remember this is an engine built to a deadline in 1998 for 1998 hardware and it's capabilities and it's based on an engine built in 1996 for 1996 hardware and it's capabilities. Some things, like complaining about the lack of scalability, is just silly. This is not a DBMS where you code for scalability first and performance second, this is a videogame that has to run in realtime in a reliable but not necessarily accurate manner.

I'm not a huge fan of Valve and I know there are much better devs out there but it doesn't seem like this is all that bad, it's just not great.
