RE5 ripped off the good parts of RE4 and put in better gameplay and a superior Mercenaries mode. The DLC which is now packaged with every version of the game, is pretty good, with Lost in Nightmares being better than most of 4.
RE6 had good gameplay, story was pretty shit, but there's not really anywhere to go after blowing the main villain's head off. I'm surprised Chris' story was as good as it was and that Jake's story was actually above a 5 for me.

I had more fun having a chainsaw duel with Jack and battling the spider mom then any of the big boom action bullshit in 5 and 6.
Its so odd how only a few years ago /v/ hated that everything was nothing but action bullshit but now that RE has gone back to horror suddenly the action one are the best in the series.

I disliked 7 because it was walking in corridors while spooky things that weren't actually spooky happened. Old RE works not because they are scary, but because the mechanics are damn enjoyable and tense. I felt none of that in 7.

7 was more RE then even 4 and it didn't need the old cast to make it feel like a classic RE.
The gameplay and atmosphere is what comes first ans 7 nailed that brilliantly.

6 still retained the characters, the current gameplay at the time, the upbeat mood the RE games always had once you beat them, the cheesieness, Mercs, mutating enemies.
REVII goes for the Survivor gameplay instead of something more or less new like 1 and 4 both did.
You can try and say the ending is upbeat, but it really isn't as Ethan's VA can only do one tone of voice.
It's not cheesy, it just references movies with every line.
Mercs is now a DLC, and the only enemy that mutates does it completely off screen. At least with 6 you see the guy turn into a T-Rex. It's still retarded, but at least you saw it. And, 6 also had C-Virus enemies which had great mutations, as well as Piers.

Except it doesn't. It rips shit from RE1 wholesale, but that doesn't make a game classic RE. It has multiple endings, but its botched. In RE1 and 3, the alternate endings were subtle and you probably wouldn't know that they were there on your first run. In VII they just give you the most obvious option possible.
VII has puzzles but even the fucking painting puzzle is easier than the baby puzzles VII gives you. The only one that you could actually call a puzzle in VII was Birthday puzzle, but it isn't a well thought-out puzzle, as the game expects you to know that you need to clean the scope and look at the TVs out of all things in order to get the combination to get the finger.
There are other things, like the fact that there are only 2 bosses, despite RE1 having 5 boss fights, maybe more as its been awhile, and RE2 and 3 had many optional boss fights against Mr X and Nemesis, not including their actual boss fights.
