I don't play games for political undertones so I try to avoid the games that are just trying to capitalize on being "progessive". Nope. Character race/ethnicity doesn't really affect my decision to buy or play a game.

As long as the game is well designed for its genre and/or well written, I'm more than happy to sink days into it.

Though I will say that I do like single-player games (mostly RPGs) that have in-game consequences for picking various character races. I was a bit disappointed that popular games like Skyrim aren't much different if you play a Nord versus an Altmer or Argonian.

I'm a gook and I really don't give a shit about who I play as. In Dark Souls I usually make my characters niggers or mudslimes in old age, but in Monster Hunter I like making fuccbois.

It depends entirely on whether or not the protagonist being of a particular race, sex, whatever makes sense and is/isn't a selling point of a game.

If the devs autistically screech about diversity, gender bullshit, etc., it makes the game shittier.

If the devs just decide to make a minority/female protagonist while completely ignoring their race/gender or actually using it as an interesting, realistic facet of their character, that's fucking great.

I want more non-human, possibly not what we'd consider male/female characters. Not because I like genderfluid pan-pandasexuals or something like that (and no, I'm not looking for weird fetish

The things is: they don't do it for ideological or political reasons. They do it for cash. It's a market, and japanese pop-culture was never shy of being as shamelessly exploitative as possible.
That does make it a little better.
