Showing someone who's used to playing one genre, and slapping something totally different in their face is probably just gonna turn them off. Old school jrpgs are story-heavy, have purposely poor conveyance so you can wander the game world, and focus a lot on numbers, with a set goal in mind. Minecraft only does the huge world part. Stuff he'd probably enjoy a lot more would be stuff like Breath of the WIld, Spore, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, maybe some newer Bethesda games as well. These are decent transition games from normie stuff likke Minecraft, so try that out first to see if he's interested. Alternatively, maybe he's not even that into vidya. It's a lot cheaper for parents to just buy a copy of Minecraft for their kid on an ipad and give the kid "ipad time" than to buy him that shiny new $400 lego set that just came out. However, you can watch youtube on an ipad. The kid is probably going to find a way to watch minecraft videos. Kids REALLY get into the things that they like, which is probably the reason why you would buy lego games if you liked legos. Kids are also incredibly easy to entertain, and as long as they're entertained, they'll continue to watch. Youtube isn't like what TV was for us. Your favorite show is over and now some girly show is coming on? Cut that shit off, it's time to play cowboys and indians. But youtube? Your favorite show will NEVER be over. Like minecraft? Put that shit on auto play, it'll never end. Eventually, kids start watching more than playing. Why WOULD they keep playing? It's easier for some funny guy that makes up stories and scenarios for a living to play the game for you, rather than to think of things on your own.

Minecraft and let's plays are just legos and cartoons for today's generation. You'll still have kids playing with legos and watching cartoons, but there won't be nearly as many as the alternative. They'll grow out of it just like we grew out of our toys (mostly, we ARE on a video game board and all), but they won't have the same fond memories of creativity that we developed in our childhoods.

As these kids mature, I'm sure they'll be saying the same thing about whatever fad that the kids of their era enjoy.

I'm really glad that he has a kid. Not because I'm desperate for a heir to the series once ZUN croaks, but because ZUN believes that there is nothing more beautiful than a child's mind, and has said that he wishes that he still could visualize or imagine things like a child can.
