The last part is the worst because Japanese is a defective language. Native Japanese words already existed before Chinese characters started being introduced in to Japan, so the scholars and institutions decided to mix the two languages.

Kanji now have 2 categories of readings, on'yomi (the Chinese reading of character at the time it was introduced in to Japan, possibly different to what the reading currently is in China) and kun'yomi (the Japanese reading, anywhere between 0 and 10 can exist, happened because native Japanese words were matched with their appropriate Chinese character). This means that learning kanji alone wont help you because you still need to know how words are spelled.

Everything screams stupid in Japanese.

Those 2 months are about 2 years ago by now sadly. And I only restarted my efforts 1 month ago. So while there are a lot of basic kanji I remember and things that I hear that make me go "I know those words" I'm kind of in a situation where I'm not sure where I stand anymore

After Tae Kim, I did Genki 1 and 2, while doing 20 cards in 2K/6K. I tried RtK but I burned out pretty quickly. I picked up KKLC and the mnemonics are great, so you should try it if you want to learn isolated kanji meanings.

Also, you should know enough to start reading Yotsubato. Download the reading packs and try to read one or two chapters a day.

Baseless vocabulary grinding through 2k/6k does not teach you Japanese. From the second you finish tae kim or genki you have to start actually reading and/or watching. This is a very arduous process as it involves in the case of hearing for you to first watch something without subs, then watch it again with the subs on, and for a third try for comprehension without subs again. And considering your average anime ep is 20 mins that's 1 hour for 1 ep.

Reading might be a bit easier but you're gonna have to read digital documents for ease at first so you can toss rikaichan or programs like it at it. Then if you don't understand a word you can jot it down in a notebook for reference and continue reading.

I'm bilingual myself on the basis of being European and English being my second language. I've been lazy as fuck though, so it really takes a long time for me to get through just a single chapter of manga. I'd say I know about 500 or so words just from JLPT5/4. I'm nowhere near good enough to go through a visual novel or videogame without getting discouraged though.
