Get in close and throw a couple of melee attacks in there. The DPS works out to be exactly the same as just holding down M1 but you end up with extra ammo over the same amount of time. Most of the skill is just picking your engagements wisely and not doing it alone.

You want to find a squishy target who is by itself, away from the bulk of the team. Ideal targets are snipers and flankers.

First you dive on top of them, the dive itself does respectable damage. Try to punch them with quick melee right before you land. The dive+punch alone will do a big chunk of damage, and then you just throw down the shield, hold left click and chase them. If possible try to keep your shield between you and the other person so they can't stun you or shoot you.

The other primary target besides snipers and flankers is healers. If the healer only has one person protecting them you can usually manage to hop right on top of them and melt them down before the rest of their team can kill you. The instant your jump recharges you get the fuck out and jump back to your own team to get healed.

Also, the monkey gun has a special property where it goes through shields like Reinhart and Orisa and other Winstons shields. Although tanks aren't your target as WInston you can still harass them through their shields or zap the healers. Also, the gun forks to any target in front of you so if you manage to hit the entire enemy team at once with your gun your DPS is insanely high. But you'll probably die really fast because there are so many enemies there.

As stated by other Anons, his range is the issue. He can't close the gap and doesn't have any way to sustain in the current meta. He's the strongest at close range encounters but has no way to get there. He's strong on certain maps but only in certain situations. He tends to work better as defense rather than offence as he can hold flanks and chokes well but even then with characters like Tracer and Pharah being in the meta he can only hold off Roadhogs that try to push and even then there's the risk of being OHKO'd.

I Main Widow and I pick widow in every comp and game mode.

If you're not great with the shurikens yet its best to try to mostly finish targets off in hectic battles where nobody knows what the hell is going on (aka 90% of koth matches). once you get better at landing them you can just flank like tracer until you start taking too much heat then deflect --> swift strike to your healer --> repeat. Also if the other team uses defensive ults to counter yours don't try to force it, you can't really slice through sound barrier/zen ult anyways so just use as a chance to push with your team without those ults being up.
