Because they're wholly reliant on technological advances. Other good games need more than just a proper engine to run on, they need to come up with story, strategy, the type of gameplay, etc.
With (motor)sports games, this is all already set in stone. It's the most low risk high reward cashgrab for companies.

Only the hardcore simulators maybe, but simcade and arcade racers are getting shittier with every new release in terms of handling.
Compare the GRID seires for example, handling got utterly fucking destroyed to the point that it feels like a cheap indie game made in unity by some college kid.
Same for Need for Speed, the latest one is fucking garbage compared to the underground games.

Racing and sport games follow established conventions of finish the race first or score more goals thans the other team, all developers have to do is perfect technological stuff and look of the game, they don't need to care about story, game world, combat system, pacing etc.

The only good racing games I've played recently are Forza Horizon 3 and Dirt Rally.
Dirt 3 had too little content and too much cut content. Dirt 2 was all round garbage. NFS franchise hasn't made a good game since the PS2. Juiced no longer exists. PGR no longer exists. PCars has fuck all content. PCars 2 runs like shit right now, hopefully they will sort that out before release. The crew was a fucking disaster but that's to be expected of ubisoft. Assetto Corsa looks like shit and it's physics aren't that great either. Driveclub deservedly died because all it had going for it was it's weather effects. Gran Turismo has been playing catch up since the end of the PS2. Dirt 4 has too few relevant rally cars and too much filler, with the only thing going for it being the track generator which isn't new, GT5 had that same dumb system. Forza is the only racing franchise keeping the genre alive whether people want to admit it or not, and with PG deciding to go on with other IPs there may not be another Horizon. Racing genre is barely alive.

50 million regular Joe's want to spend $400 of their wage to play 1-2 hours a week on casual games based off things they enjoy such as sports and cars. 10 million others spent $400 because they don't have a solid hobby yet and simply consume mainstream video games trying to suck out all the entertainment they can get before buying the next game immediately. 50 mil beats 10 mil no matter how quickly and blindly those 10 mil buys the next game in the series, so racing/sports has a fuck load more money to work with to polish their games.

Dirt 4 is missing too many relevant rally cars. Things like most of the lancers, imprezas. There's no Toyota, no Citroen, no Skoda. no Peugeot 206 or 307. I know they will try to pull the licensing card. IE they didn't want to spend the money to get them, so we can probably expect them to be DLC post launch. But hey, at least it's not like Dirt 3 where cars were removed from the game and sold back as "DLC".

I haven't tried enough of the game to have a good opinion of the tracks in 4. I know they are all "procedurally generated", which I suppose is better than Dirt 2 and 3's cut and change tracks which were literally a single track cut into sections which often overlapped and made the game boring as all hell once you started seeing the same shit over and over on "different stages". But procedural generation usually is not as good as handmade tracks.

Codemasters said they specifically had problems with Toyota lately even though Toyota has re-entered WRC with their own works team. TRD want too much money for the classic Celica and Corolla on top of the new WRC Yaris.

It's one of the biggest mysteries because TRD is normally considered one of the best to deal with but apparently they do demand a lot of promo and "featured" cars as well. Codemasters probably wasn't willing to budge.

Surprised the Yaris WRC didn't show up in Forza Horizon 3 yet though.

You could actually oversteer, drifts were risky in races since they don't reset on their own and you have to countersteer after you're done, unlike in the garbage 2015 game where everything is automatic and the car has perfect twitch control even at max speeds where you can't even possibly lose control during a drift.

Hahahah you serious? Racing games still don't even have body deformation. I've tried multiple racing simulators, flight simulators, train simulators, all that crap over the years. They're stagnant as fuck. Sure they "simulate" the experience of whatever it's made to simulate, but only to the same extent they've done it for the past 10-15 years. There's hardly ever anything deeper going on with the vehicles or the world, it's always just the very surface level stuff that's taken into account. Of course, I might've just tried the wrong simulators but whatever.
