It wasn't a masterpiece. Some aspects of the combat, and the witcher sense, were a little bit dull and many enemies were recycled. However, I did enjoy it enough to play 190h of it.
It was pretty and I enjoyed the setting and the story. Some gameplay elements weren't half bad. I paid 70€ for the game and dlc and I don't think it was too much.

If the 'right' time were presented correctly there wouldn't be an issue. The animation of the enemy is the only thing a player has to base their strategy off. The enemy can't be swinging in one direction and hit the player on the opposite side. That's just stupid.

That said, alchemy is pretty OP starting at tier 2 of alchemy abilities. I was level 42 fighting some 48s in Toussaint, and since my health is so high I'd just let them chunk me for half health so they got the damage reflected back at them since it seems to function off of their damage packet, rather than me taking a damage penalty for being outside of my range. They'd kill themselves in three hits off of the Toxic Blood mutation.

I liked it too but I have to admit that it lacked any depth whatsoever. Too many percentage upgrades for skills, alchemy was too watered down, signs as a whole relied too much on being spammed instead of having strategic uses. Witcher 1 had some really good alchemy and it's a damned shame Witcher 3 dumbed it down too much. Witcher 2 had better alchemy but you can tell that the game wasn't really designed with it in mind at all.

Witcher 3 does have thw benefit of mods that helped overhaul the combat enough for it to have enjoyable alchemy and signs though.

what's good about it?

>landscapes are gorgeous
>open spaces, forests; each place gets a completely different atmosphere depending on the weather and daytime(rain + night + torches gives you truly unforgettable feels, better than cyberpunk)
>some secondary characters are surprisingly well written
>personally i enjoyed the combat very much, and here i get the very rare feeling that there was not enough it. Most wrpg games, like old and nu-bioware focus too much on combat which is just a bland filler.Here I feel the case was just the opposite.

what's bad about it:

>open world construction is deeply flawed: you explore the map and in some area there are nest of monsters/bandits you can easily tackle, which is satisfying, but then suddenly in the EXACT SAME AREA there are groups that are far beyond your capabilities on current character lvl. Why would you do this? You essentially create artificial holes in the world, places you simply cannot visit during exploration - it ruins the immersion instantly and reminds you that it's just a game. Also this has no justification in the story or lore, those are just the same bandits, only someone wrote a higher number over their heads, in stats. This does not make any sense.
>atrocious handholding - there is this beautifully crafted world, but you are discouraged to enjoy it, because game leads you through every area with a gps and batman senses, which is just an off-horse gps. So i bet most players will focus on the line that points them to the destination, instead of observing the world around them, getting a subtle feel of it, and then finding the place on your own.
(you can of course disable it but the game was not created to be played that way(like lets say thief 1), so that it gets annoying quickly)

>forced main quest - this game was meant to be an open world with a series of standalone adventures - jobs that you as a witcher can take. This is clearly seen with the bloody baron quest, which has little to do with Ciri, yet effectively takes the whole first part of the game. This does not make sense that way. The main quest is supposed to be the hook for the player. You play to find out what has happened to Ciri and where she currently is. Yet for the first part of the game, you get engaged in the whole story of the bloody baron, his family and lands, which is interesting but has little to do with your quest. That is a problem when the first act of the story i detached from said story and aspiring to something standalone. Of course as long as you insist on there being a main quest at all. Considering the amount of shit you can do in game, that is completely disconnected from Ciri and her story, it should have been, in my view, just an open world game with different standalone jobs and a feeling of being a medieval bounty-hunter.(which is what the two first books -often described as best - implied)

Overall an interesting, but not the best, game. What certainly is unique about the Witcher 3 is that it is probably the only AAA title in recent years which has been developed with interest in quality.

the writing is shit - not one original idea exists within the books, which features worse storytelling than the game, and the game is cliche teenaged fan-fic idiocy with cliche fantasy characters and a cliche fantasy story

the follow the glowing footsteps mechanic which dominates EVERY MISSION IN THE GAME is a joke.

It's a pretty good game. I'm actually going through it for the very first time.
I've waited a long time due to other things going on in my life and swords and boards fantasy has never been my jam. That said, the combat isn't what you would call fluid. It's not terrible, especially since you have plenty of options in combat but it's still fairly wooden at times. Better than it's predecessor in any case.

Atmosphere and worldbuilding is top notch though. Manages to pull me in despite it not being set in a theme I thoroughly enjoy.
