And this might mostly come down to the MMO communities. I've been playing korean MMOs since 2006 and for the first several years "DD" was used exclusively. "DPS" got more traction after WoW addons became widespread, with similar trends picked up by other MMOs. I also saw only "DD" and absolutely no "DPS" when was discussing builds for old dungeon crawlers back in 90s.

So I'd say that DPS is more modern, console-driven, and has practically become standard because people are, like, 12, like you, OP.

i use the dps, healer and tank names but i would REALLY prefer if they were called attacker, healer and defender

the current terms are inconsistent and make literally no sense when compared to each other, and i only use them because everyone else does
