I wanna get into Etrian Odyssey. Should I play 1, 2, 3, or 4?

4 is likely the best starting place. 3 is the most solid DS entry, and definaly one of the better games. 1 and 2 can be safely skipped, unless you agree highly with >>379341926

I say 1 and 2 can be skipped since there is updated versions of those games (on the 3DS). They bring enough QoL changes to the field unless you MUST absolutely play from the beginning.

Etrian 1- Don't bother, really outdated, bugged skills mean that you can reduce enemy damage by like 99% with 1 or 2 skills, maybe 1 I forget how immunize works. Waste of your time.

Etrian 2- worst version of the worst etrian game. Most people drop it before the 3rd tileset. Even jankier classes.

Etrian 3- Where the series started to get really good. Not a great starting point, though. Graphics really outdated too.

Etrian 4- Excellent starting point, really good game and beginner friendly. There are multiple team builds that can clear all content on hardest difficulty. Grind is there but not that bad.

Etrian Untold 1: Another good starting point BUT ONLY ON CLASSIC. story mode on 1 is really bad, you're classlocked and half of the game's fun is in customizing so you're getting screwed over. Also, a good part of the series' atmosphere and charm comes from the story being told in a minimal way- the way townspeople say different things the deeper you get, etc etc. Story mode does things differently by beating you over the head constantly all day every day with shit you won't care about. Either classic mode this or 4 are the best starting points.

Etrian Untold 2: they fixed the grimoire mechanic and fixed the story mode to, if not add to the game, at least not ruin it. Still has pretty bad class balance and boring tilesets imo.


I'd go 4 -> Untold 1 Classic -> 3 -> Untold 2

There are times where release order is nor the proper order. Those times are few and far between and Etrian Odyssey is not among them. Find a DS emulator of your choice and get on it.
Anyone who tells you to skip 1 or 2 likely hasn't even played them. Just disregard them.

But they did fix it. It's not the best it can be when you consider things like enemy skills, but it's infinitely better than the heap of garbage that shipped in the first Untold, on multiple levels.

And skipping 1 or 2 on the DS isn't too big of a deal if you're trying to introduce someone to the series. I've had many a friend play the first game and quit after a stratum or so only to later point them towards one of the 3DS games and get them hooked.

Literally the only thing EO1 and 2 have over their Untold versions is enemy sprites, which is completely up to personal preference.
The Untold games have a shitload of quality of life adjustments that make them much nicer to play, are at least a little bit better balanced, and have extra content.

Playing them in release order is pretty retarded if you are new to the series, while not necessarily the best game out of the bunch, EO4 is easily the best entry point.

There's always something like boost or whatever PQ used, but they change it up every game.

Start with 3, it's the best of the DS games. 4's literally ez mode compared to the rest of the series, so that might be a better starting place, but it's hard to go backwards given the QoL improvements present in later entries.
