Unfortunately, the 3DS games are divisive at best, so you're probably best off starting with one of the GBA games, or Path of Radiance on the GC.

FE11 and FE12 are remakes of FE1 and FE3 (FE3 being direct sequel to FE1) so go with those, they are on DS. You will need to use a fantranslation for FE12.
FE2 (and Echoes, its remake) is a spinoff set during events of FE1 on another continent.
FE13 (Awakening) is a very distant sequel to FE1 and FE3 set on the same continent but in a very distant future (thousand years later or so).
FE4 is its own thing, different world entirely.
FE5 is a spinoff set during events of FE4, similarly to how FE2 was to FE1.
Neither FE4 nor FE5 have remakes and FE5 fantranslation is not only incomplete but also complete garbage, FE4 has a decent one that's like 99% complete.
FE6, FE7 and FE8 are on GBA and don't have remakes either, FE6 and FE7 are again in a different world but FE7 is a direct prequel to FE6, FE6 has a good fantranslation available since it was never officially released in English.
FE8 is it's own thing in a new world again.
FE9 and FE10 are in their own new world as well, FE10 being a direct sequel to FE9 similarly to how FE3 was to FE1.

Fates is a compilation of 3 games, but it's an abomination that's not worth playing at all if you don't know Japanese due to raped translation.
Birthright and Conquest are two alternate stories that revolve around the faction which you pick after tutorial, while Revelation is sort of "true events" kind of deal briging both of those and having its own story. Playing Birthright and Conquest is advised before Revelation for most optimal experience, doesn't matter if you play Conquest or Birthright first however.
Again, don't bother if you don't know Japanese or at least until fan retranslation is finished.

When I said the 3DS games are divisive at best, this game would be the key instigator for that sentiment. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the game, due to exceptionally poor map design and the fact that Lunatic can be a literal crapshoot, while Hard might as well be the same as Normal, coupled with a pretty disjointed plot and relatively uninteresting characters.

Thracia was arguably the first "modern FE". It dialled map size down again while introducing more varied and focused maps with clear objectives. It had plenty of Indoor and city-scape settings and fixed the skill system to what Path of Radiance would later reintroduce.
Aside from Capture and Fatigue there really wasn't anything esoteric about it.

It's not, it's just the black outlines which FE12 doesn't have. Only Shadow Dragon did.
In fact there's a patch for FE11 to give it FE12's updated sprites (without the black sperm outline) and the improved map tilesets.
Also there's another patch that removes the requirements for Gaiden chapters, you have no excuse.

Wrong, the patcher it comes with is simply fucked. You can apply it to a good dump and it will work as well, you just have to tell it to ignore the CRC mismatch.

Also, reinforcements appear EVERY turn once they start, and unlike the GBA games, you cannot prevent this. You can get flooded with units in certain chapters because of this. For example, Hardin's chapter. And fuck wyvern
