Right now, unless you actually want the multiplayer which isn't very good and is very dead, there is no other point to buying the paid version other that simple desire to support the developers. In future, I'm pretty sure Xen is supposed to come out for the paid version only though.

I can explain why Resident Evil HD folks aren't charging for it. It's actually very simple. It's because doing that would be illegal. You see: the reason why Black Mesa is allowed to be sold and not immediately slammed with cease-and-desist order is because Valve themselves approached the mod team and offered them a Steam sale spot. Because VALVE said "while you clearly build this based on our game, you did a lot of work and we belive that should be rewarded if there is there is a market for it."

Otherwise: the free version is still available for free, the team feels like they are being rewarded for a work they do (and it is quite a lot of work, even if it's based on an existing franchise), so I really, really fail to see where the problem is. Black Mesa Source is literally a perfect port. It translates everything about the Half Life 2 experience flawlessly into Half Life 1, right down to the stunted cliffhanger ending shunted in at an arbitrary part midway through the game followed by years of stone cold silence from the developers in which the story is never resolved and eventually everyone just pretends it never happened to begin with.

My personal grudge is that the product they sell since 2015 offers virtually nothing more than the free mod released 5 years ago in terms of content.
Nobody cared about the single player, nobody cared about mods (we have HL2 for Source mods, thanks you very much), shit like AI improvement and new textures are nice but should be free and come after the game is finished.
Instead, they keep charging for what is basically a polished free mod that still doesn't have the last 30% of the game.
