The story didn't change drastically to suit the gender's role, especially in an Asian society (not counting the dating sims aspect): You still had a vague background (parents dying in an accident could apply for both MC and feMC), you still received the Universe arcana without making some bonds and fucking chicks/dudes, you still died in the end.
In other words, the P3 protagonist was the true "blank state", unaffected by a defined gender because that was the writer's intention.

It's just a jack-of-all-supports that doesn't excel in neither healing or buffing and has no advantage whatsoever over almost any other character you ca put in. Junpei was actually more level-headed than Ryuji. He was impulsive at the beginning but the power of love™ did change his POV bit by bit. And that was understandable given the different circumstances between Joker and Door-kun. He was endearing for me.
