You already made this /tv/ slash /jp/ thread yesterday.
I even went as far as to download and watch the movie, and while the Godzilla himself was pretty gud, the film overall was rather lacking.
I hope Pacific Rim gets a sequel. Japan could learn how to make better kaiju movies from the west.

I thought Godzilla was protecting Japan from other monsters, not fucking everyones shit up.

This is a yet another reboot. Made specifically to return Godzilla to its roots as a symbol of the wrath of nature, and to remind of the dangers of nuclear energy. Especially since Godzilla pretty much turned into a good guy in the later movies.

I'm 100% serious. None of the characters are memorable. The dialogues are all stiff and don't showcase any human drama during the disaster. It's just makes some jabs at the incompetent Japanese government, being too indecisive and caring too much about reputation, unwilling or unable to act in crisis situations. But that's all. It's only good for the action scenes with Godzilla. That's actually the very opposite to what the American Godzilla (2014) did. Too much talking and exposition and not enough Godzilla himself. Pacific Rim on the other hand was great, showcased multiple beautifully designed monsters and mechs, had some human drama and enough comedy. Ron Perlman's character alone made the movie feel more alive than Shin Godzilla. I wish Pacific Rim expanded more on the other Jaeger crews though. They all kinda got killed off before we learned anything about them.

They want Godzilla to be a big happy fluffly dinosaur who beats up bad monsters for 45 minutes. They hate the more serious movies like the original and Shin Godzilla because 'le no fun' and 'too grimdark' and they can't roleplay about it. Go fucking search the archive for their Godzilla threads where they literally and unironically RP as Gamera and Godzilla. I have never seen anything so stomach turning in my life.
Unfortunately they epitomize a large number of the American fanbase, and there is a reason for that. The average adult American Godzilla fan grew up with Showa, USA didn't get the original movie until 2000 fucking 4, and most of the Heisei movies were extremely difficult to get after Biollante. So you have an entire generation of adult children whose only frame of reference for Godzilla is Vs Megalon and Godzilla's Revenge and will aggressively defend that characterization. God fucking help us all.

Last game I played was Aurora 4x. Godzilla is bombarded from orbit by potentially hundreds of extremely high yield cobalt-fusion warhead tipped missiles traveling upwards of 40,000km/s. If nukes with 6 times the yield of modern ICBM's don't do anything then I've got multiple ships armed with weapons that teleport decaying meson particles inside of objects, causing significant damage to anything exposed to the energy burst associated with that decay. If that still doesn't work I can simply pump the atmosphere full of toxic gasses, or remove the atmosphere entirely with a series of 1 million ton orbital terraforming platforms. Removing one earths atmosphere worth of gasses will take approximately 8 months.

Not him but I unironically do enjoy the Transformers films. They are exactly what they're advertised as, just giant robots punching each other.
If that's a premise that's makes you think you can find some deep thoughts in the films, that's on you.
Pacific Rim was mediocre, and Shin Gojira is infinitely a better movie.
Doesn't make it, or the Transformers movies any less enjoyable, though.

There's a lot more going on in Shin Godzilla than Fukushima, there's stuff western audiences won't pick up on, there's a lot of commentary on Jap culture as well. It's really the sort of movie you need a guide to pick up on everything. For example this scene here with the one TV playing a cartoon. This is apparently because TV Tokyo is notorious for never breaking their broadcasting no matter what big news or disaster is going on.

And before you bring something about being able to one shot the Lich King up or some shit, that has more to do with gameplay mechanics than story reasons.
