Well, first and foremost, obviously, try not to die.
But the metal raths are tanky motherfuckers, so you have an actual risk running out of time on this quest.
So I'd recommend gunning the shit out of them, because there are not enough flash bombs in the world to give you enough time to wail at them freely with a melee weapon.
But if you do decide to go melee, take out Los first. Because even in the later half of the quest, when you don't have to deal with the second monster, Los still won't get you as much time to attack him, as Ian, because he never fucking lands.
