I've never played a Persona game before, but after finding out they're standone games I went and bought 5.
115 hours later its over and I loves. I then find out Persona is just a spinoff franchise of SMT. I always see threads about SMT but never bothered to check out any of them.
My question for you, /v/: What are the essentials for someone that wants to get into the franchise? I lookes up the name on google and I got the list but some of them seem old, some look like they're only in moonrunes, etc.
I'm aware they won't be similar to what I played but I really enjoyed the enemy design and it looks like theyre recurring in this franchise so yes
>and I loves.
and I loved it*
Mega milk edit when

I personally haven't played many mainline games myself, but the "essentials" are rather common knowledge.
>Nocturne
>Strange Journey
>IV+Apocalypse
I'd personally add DDS and Soul Hackers, but those are spin-off series, not unlike Persona.
See image.
Check out Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga, and maybe SMTIV. All of those are solid places to start. After that you can just gravitate towards what you think looks neat.

This is exactly what I needed. Thanks a lot

Also, the SMT and Persona generals have small beginner guides that they post in their threads. Probably don't need them, but they offer some really helpful tips for people just starting out. Shit like, which stats should I put points into to avoid making end-game a fucking nightmare? Or, how do I do this hidden side quest that's obnoxious to finish but unlocks another ending?

I would recommend playing other Persona games as well. The series as a whole is pretty great. Especially if you enjoyed P5, P3 and 4 are very similar.

welcome to the family loser
>>379255935
SMT II has best story and characterd
Nocturne is best over-all
SMT IV is mediocre over-all, but has amazing music
SMT IV: Apocalypse has the best combat and bosses in the series, but has shit story
Strange Journey has the best dungeons in the series, good story, is the most unique, but somewhat shallow combat.
Maybe go SMT II forst since it's the oldest one, so it won't be so rough to go back to older titles. A remake of Strange Journey is coming out for the 3DS, which hopefully fixes the combat, so maybe hold off SJ for now. Start wherever
>>379257023
I want to succ that succ
Remember to play the Raidou games, OP
The devil survivor games are really fun, and if you own a 3ds you can play the enhanced editions which add more content
>>379257940
>which hopefully fixes the combat
It won't add press turn, it was made so as to avoid it, it's just game breaking.
>>379258192
Raidou gameplay is really dated though
>>379257940
>fix
There's nothing to fix. Not every game needs to be pt.
>>379259070
Demon whispering for doomguy would be amazing though, also real contorl over his stat distribution.
>>379255935
I want my own Demonica outfit. Just the hat will do.
>>379258632
Both quite playable with citra.
>>379258725
You don't need press turn to make SJ's combat good. Just make it less shallow and rebalance broken skills like Jihad
>>379259070
Improve, then. Why would kt not be improved in a remake?
It's a fun, varied series.
>>379259926
>broken skills like Jihad
Jihad is balanced by virtue of being super late game and only required to beat mem aleph.
An actually broken skill would be luster candy, which is something you must run on every single team, until mem aleph.
>>379259283
Define quite playable cause I'm getting erect here
>>379260023
>Jihad
nani the fuck?
>>379260023
>virtue of being super late game
The problem is that you can solo the entire end-game and post-game without any effort. There's hardly any challenge once you get good guns
>>379260172
Aside from some minor issues you may or may not find
>Desu: op song will probably play twice before starting the game, disable frame limit and done
>DeSu2: depending on the build you can't enter a name for bunny and accessing the mail app takes a couple of minutes
Playable otherwise.
>>379260023
how is luster candy broken? use more than one and the boss will spam deep blue
>>379255935
>>379256951
Here's a more up to date version
Note that it's still missing SMT IV:A which is a sequel to IV
>>379260023
Guess that explained why my Alice with Drain + Luster Candy + Jihad was broken.
Still Mem Aleph wasn't a joke.
how long is sj? it feels short
>>379260572
>Alice
>drain
>luster candy
>jihad
How do people make demons like these on their first playthrough without grinding or using guides?
>>379257940
Nocturne is unfinished trash, it's not the best in anyway.
IV:A is the best overall because the only important thing about SMT is team building and combat.
>>379260576
Not sure why you think that since it's the longest game in mainline.
>>379261543
SMt has way too annoying characters and keeps some of the really shit mechanics IV had.
>>379260576
>it feels short
Because unlike most SMT the pacing and game itself is pretty quick and not glacial like SMTII or other games, SJ is actually pretty long.
I mean, I love SMTII and all but that game is fucking slow in everything.
>>379257940
Nocturne isn't the best overall. Both IV and Apoc is better
>>379261708
Characters were better than the edge lords and fags of Nocturne.
And even with its downsides, IV:A is far above and beyond all other games in all of Megaten when it comes to the combat. Press turn gets better with every single iteration.
>>379256110
Most SMT spin-offs deal with similar themes but they're still all very much unlike each other, which why there are so many different people with different preferences who like the franchises. I mean come on, can you really call Persona 5, DDS, Strange Journey, DeSu or Raidou similar?
>>379262272
I only meant that in a sense that they're very explicitly spin-offs. Since there are so many autistic mainlinefags that get butthurt when you mention the spin-offs together with the mainline games.
