>after what feel like an eternity you finally arrive at their house
>he/she is utterly shocked by seeing you there

>the invite was sent by your old best friend, who wanted to take the chance to rub your face in having taken your girl and doing much better than you in life overall
>he invites you to his bachelor party with the world's biggest shit-eating grin

I would have to disagree. These games do have a story, but they take a backseat to world and immersing the player into the world. IMO I think you are confusing rich lore and world building with an actual plot that drives the player forward. When you play these games, you are driven to understand the world rather than experiencing a story.
Another way I would think about it is like trying to Invision a novelisation of these games. It would be more like an encyclopedia than anything else.

To be fair, Galerians: Ash is actually the PS2 sequel to the PS1's survival-horror game Galerians, and both games explore the topics of engineering bioweapons, exploiting psychics, AIs running rampant and a whole lot of other shit in a dystopian future. Also, there's an anime based on the games.

G:A takes a more action-adventure route with it (even though it's still a survival horror), giving you a somewhat better combat system and some admittedly cool but basic psychic powers. Everyone looks like they came out of a BDSM club except for your assumed waifu, but then your clone/brother gone psycho frenches you and you psychic each other to death in a nuclear reactor for reasons.

Also despite being a survival horror, neither of the games are particularly scary.

Yeah. It also did the whole "drugs give you crazy powers" thing before Bioshock did, but it used an energy meter for each power and ODing/overusing powers fucks you up hard. Cool concepts, in my opinion, but holy shit is the story a mess. Also everyone is wearing studded leather, but it's not overdesigned so at least it gets that credit. It's possible to ruin a save file if you get stuck for too long though, since your ammo largely relies on what you can find instead of what enemies drop. Oh, and iirc it's a tank-controls kinda game and the camera can get a little fucky. Worth checking out, but the plot is a fucking mess, and I say this having enjoyed the crazy ride that is Drakengard.

Final Fantasy XIII is really bad.

Some highlights are
>almost nothing is ever really explained to you and has to be looked up in an ingame datalog
>characters talking about how they are deciding their own destiny while constantly doing exactly what the villain tells them to do
>fade-to-black screen transitions between locations because the devs had no clue on how to show the characters getting to the new location without dying
>an entire story chapter spend literally wandering around aimlessly
>The Arc, an ancient training ground, aka literally level grinding in the plot
>after doing everything the villain wanted them to until the very end, the party is saved by a literal deux ex machina (seriously, some god decides to intervene to save the party)
>you only ever learn about the god in the sequel making it look like the power of friendship saved the party

I actually submit Prey (the 2006 one). I don't think I've seen a story that would be actually as insulting as that shit. I've seen a lot of bad stories in games (shit like Crysis 2/3, all Halo games, SC2, Fallout 3/4 etc...) but my God was Prey exceptionally awful. The combination of insanely poor narrative techniques, terrible writing, the absolute awful EDGE and the way the whole story played itself so god damn straight while being about Cherokee spirits defeating alien invasion planning to harvest humans for proteins - it was just unbearable.

Makese even shit like Metroid other M or Sanic actually look tasteful in retrospect.

Actually, Ethan Carther is about something entirely different. It's kinda annoying how people completely fail to understand even basic storytelling devices yet somehow still feel entirely justified to go out and shit all over them.

Ethan Carter is kind of a sweet sad little story about a child populating his rather bleak environments with tales inspired by mostly B'grade new weird fantasy literature, topped with an ending that shows that in the end, despite how bleak his surroundings seemed, he was loved by his closest one after all: they just kinda failed to show it until it was too late.

It's not amazing, it's kinda awkwardly put together and honestly the gameplay itself is really weak, but it's not a terrible story and it definitely does not do any "but it was all a dream" shit: you'd have to be literally braindead to interpret the story as such and end there.
