I think Roger voicing Sonic is fine. IT suits his current writting (Colors Generation, Lost World). The only reason why he feels more snug and ulikable, to me at least, is because he is getting more roles in Boom, in which Sonic is way more obnoxious.

Opposite for me. EVery SOnic line SOunds like THIs to me when Jason says them. Jason's Shadow is lacking is delivery but the speaking voice is just much easier to listen to than Thornton's. People like Humphrey but the guy was barely audible in SA2 thanks to its horrible sound mixing and Heroes isn't exactly a good example of voice work across the board.

Roger is a Sonic for generation that knows his star has faded significantly. I think that self awareness comes off very clearly in his performance and that's why some people might not like him. That 2cool4school attitude with total sincerity is a tough sell to both kids and adults these days, and the writing in every Sonic game ever was never good enough to pull it off. Roger dials it back a lot, but the writing again still isn't quite good enough to sell this more chill Sonic. Colors and Generations carried themselves well enough but fuck me Lost World sucked.

I think people are underselling the dark age. People turning on the Adventure games isn't a recent thing, the critics had completely changed their tune by the time of their rereleases on Gamecube. Many fans had turned on them by 06. Dark age was 99-10 or at least 02-10. Even with Lost World and Boom, Sonic has maintained a lot more good will this decade.
