In the Super Mario 64 beta that was made on SNES, the only content is Mario chasing a rabbit around the room. The devs worked on this for years until they perfected the controls, then ported it to N64.
Chasing the bunny for the key remained as a task in the final version of Mario 64. It has a name, MIPS the Rabbit. So, the bunny was always significant to Mario, way before Rabbids were invented.
