Awakening and Path are two of my favorite FE titles but as a jumping on point I will always suggest 7 ( just called fire emblem in the west ) emulate it get on the wii u whatever you have to do that is a perfect game for a new comer

Yeah as the other anons said its a good starting point. Considering it was the first globally released FE the game was made with new western players in mind. FE8 is also a decent starting point it has a much more condensed tutorial but its the easiest game in the series. For the GBA games I really wouldn't recommend FE6 until you have played 7-8, its the most difficult of the 3 and just has some overall really stupid design choices and I can't recommend it for a newcomer. FE7 is also a prequel to 6 so thats another reason to play it first.

Honestly anything from FE7 forward is not a bad starting point except Radiant Dawn because of its difficulty and it being a direct sequel to Path of Radiance.

How do the stat growths work? Are they randomized, can you influence them, and if a character has a crappy stat it's crappy forever?

You can influence them in 1 and 3 (not the remakes though). It's really not a problem, if a unit turns out bad you can just bench them for a more stable pre-promote that comes in later even if their potential isn't quite as strong.

They're randomized with some games giving you items to influence growth rates but it's not too often that happens. If someone gets shit level ups they might be salvagable with stat boosters but really anyone can be used in most games without much worry, especially 7 and 9.

Yes, a unit with good bases always be better than one that has meh bases but good growths. Guy walking in with capped stats is guaranteed to be great for however he's available, and a unit with good growths doesn't guarantee he'll proc them on level up. Yes to the first question too, although Gaiden/Echoes and 4 do focus on a smaller cast than the average FE with like 30-40 something units.

In all games except Gaiden (and by extension Shadows of Valentia), Genealogy, and Radiant Dawn you'll only be able to field less than half of your total unit pool anyway, so deaths and rng fuckery are cushioned to an extent.

Not really, it depends on the game and what level of play you're at. In super esports efficiency runs, yeah, you're gonna be lowmanning with prepromotes, but in normal play the gamble of raising up a unit you like is always fun and viable if you play smart. Just don't count prepromotes out, they're often the most reliable units and refusing to use them is a common newbie mistake.

If you want to make the most of base stats going in blind, all you really have to do is compare the stats your new units come with to the units you've already leveled up.

I played RD first and enjoyed it. PoR would be much better for a beginner though simply because it's a very easy game but still very fun. RD is bone-crushingly hard, at least for FE.
