I haven't played P5, but NieR wasn't that great either. The combat is trash (literally mash button till enemy is dead or "hack" him to death in the same exact way for 500 times over), the story is pretty neat but nothing spectacular..

There is an optimal way to play, but if you don't want to concern yourself with it just wait till NG+. Basically you want hang out with differnt types of social links that boost stats, like hanging out with Yoshido or Iwai then using those points to hang out with someone else, but unless you're lucky or choose the right option in every single confidant it's not easy

How depressing would it be?

Not to partake in the "my game is better than your game" shitshow, but what exactly about P5 is so good? I watched a bunch of gameplay to see if it was something I'd be interested in and it looked pretty, I dunno, I don't wanna say bad or underwhelming cus it looked good but it also didn't look particularly special one way or the other. It has a great visual style and good music, but is that all it has going for it or was there more I wasn't getting? Waifus?

Persona in general has the best visual design and music you could get in a modern JRPG. the SMT gameplay makes it far more engaging than most other JRPGs battle systems and the time management system + social sim is very immersive. Trust me when I say you actually need to play it to understand why someone would love or hate the series

The 3 hours of Nier I played felt like a chore compared to the 120 hours of persona I played

Nier Automata is a cheesy story about love and hope and miracle etc. Its theme is literally the first thing you'd think of when thinking about highly advanced android/robot. Not that it's a bad thing, the cheesiness helps you get into the story without too much introduction and get to the gameplay quicker, which is also largely why Persona has the typical highschool setup. You don't need to try to understand what's going on before you start playing the game. It's an advantage with a cost.

Never believe hype, ever, for any game under the sun. Im trying not to oversell you on it because it's my favorite vidya series, but if you are a fan of JRPGs and a fan of resource management + social sim you will like the game at the minimum. If you don't mind some older systems, try 3 or 4? same shtick but the gameplay isn't as clean and they are both cheaper

The main reason why I like persona is because the gane switches up enough for ne to not get burned out.
By the time I get tired of dungeon crawling, I can do some waifu sim stuff and shit, By the time I get tired of that a new dungeon opens up.
It also help that it is a solid rpg, so I am basically stuck in an endless loop untill the end of the game.
