So I'm curious. The 3DS games, at least 4U, had a lock-on system. It wasn't perfect, but it was a good way to focus on the monster. Does the Switch version not have that?

I got super turned off of slip 'n' slide combat after the God of Wars games and Kingdom Hearts, and Monster Hunter was on pretty much the opposite end of the spectrum.

When you get really good at the game, you can reach a sort of focus high where everything makes sense and the battle becomes less slapping the monster with a pool noodle and a deadly endurance dance battle.

If I have to be completely honest, I like to compare Monster Hunter to the Fighting supergenre - in fact, I'd even argue it's a part of it, after a fashion. Nothing about traditional 2D arcade fighters appeals to me, but strangely I can see so many aspects of those present in Monster Hunter and suddenly I'm really drawn to them.

Picking your weapon is like picking your character. Then you pick a monster, and it's like picking your opponent. The map is your stage. There's a time limit. Every attack has a different power value, there's pros and cons to every attack, you need to maximize offensive output while minimizing your openings, you need to learn to predict what the monster is going to do and then react accordingly, planning and preparing for the battle.

And at high level play, you're basically seeing the game in terms of hitboxes and damage values, with the very best players calculating the damage they've done and counting how many hitpoints are left on a monster's body part before they flinch or stagger, giving them a new opening or even stopping a monster in its tracks mid-nuke.

And there's something viscerally satisfying about actually seeing these huge monsters recoil in pain, limping off, armour broken, body battered, pieces of them missing after you've spent so much time fighting them, the sort of fruits of your labour feeling.
