3 plays pretty differently, but it's the only real 16th-18th century RTS besides Cossacks/American Conquest

It's good, not as good as 2, but still good. May take awhile to get used to some of the changes and new mechanics. Just remember that in development it wasn't originally going to be an aoe game, and it does show.

I loved AOE3. One of my favorites in the genre. Try not to get wrecked by French cavalry.

Any remaining support for online servers? I stopped playing around the time ownership changed and it looked shaky.

Any hope for further installments in the series? Who owns the rights? I never got into that online game from a few years ago.

I find it way more entertaining than 2 because it's a way quicker game with less micromanaging

but the card system sucks ass and most units are useless

Microsoft killed Ensemble Studios (the developers) a few years ago, so I doubt we'll ever see another iteration. They could revive the series giving it to another studio, but I don't see the genre as strong as it were before to the point that reviving an old series could drive one game's sales.
