Nocturne's high budget and horrible initial sales almost killed Atlus. That's how they lost the sentiment to the mainline.
Good thing they slowly rebuilt it with a few handheld games instead of canning it for good.
Thanks to reintroducing some of the core mechanics and themes of SMT, Persona 5 should generate more interest in the upcoming games. Let's all look forward to the new golden era of MegaTen games.
