My problem is - I'd have to repeat the same maps I've already completed in order to do so. Or progress the story with the weaker units, and ending up with underleveled new units when I finally unlock them. Like unlocking the non-elemental mage for example.

Disgaea 5 is probably the most accessible gameplay wise, if you happen to have a PS4.

If you don't, it looks like they're releasing it on Steam soon, before 3 and 4. Guess the Switch port sped things up.

The earlier games in the series requires a bit more early grinding than later games.

That's pretty much the game play.

Generally it is easier to level a single guy to oneshot the enemies in every story map. This usually ends up being your main guy.

Then, at a certain point a map will show up that makes it easy to power level the other shit units you want. Though, again it's usually pointless for the story. (The only exception being the PS3 version of Dis3, because they changed how Resistance and Defense factor into skill damage [in that it completely doesn't...] which lets the AI start just one shotting your guys back even if they're rediculously over leveled.)

The post game content is just grinding up numbers for a few hours in the super-power-leveling maps, and increasingly diving into the item world for shit that wasn't gated behind bullshit RNG in the first few games.

That's really it. It is a time waster game about chasing higher numbers, and also delicious loli demons.

Just play the game like a normal sRPG until you beat the main story, THEN you can go back and do focused grinding to tackle the post-game content.

Don't try to play multiple disgaea's in a row, you'll burn out before you even get through the second story.

You don't need to grind long to unlock characters. At most you just need to get the required classes to 30, I think? The grind is only required if you want to finish the bonus content.
Personally, I enjoy raising characters to a high level and grinding for it.

OP if you're still here there's no need to unlock every class ASAP, it's possible to have someone shoot from lv1 to lv.20 with one kill so just wait until you're at that point to start unlocking classes. The base classes they give you are all you really need to be any game, unless you're deliberately trying to get a certain class.
