Yeah I gotta few.

>Dont run. Ever
>Forget your flamethrower even exists until the nest
>Move cover to cover
>Try hiding behind rather than under tables. For some retarded reason the Alien cant see over things....no idea why
>May be dangerous to but explore. Resources are scarce so you need everything you can get
>Dont use medpacks carelessly

Finally my biggest tip: DO NOT STAY IN ONE AREA

I know it runs contrary to the explore tip but really your main objective is to keep a healthy distance between you and the alien.
>>
>>379137130
To add to the other guy, mix up your distractions. If you keep distracting the xeno in a particular way, it adapts to it and wont be distracted the next time around. Also pay VERY close attention to the vents and if you see drool, thats your cue to get out.

I was playing The White Chamber until I got to the fridge, got melted and then looked up why that happened.
Apparently I was supposed to hit the chain with an Axe, which was my first thought obviously, but it didn't let me do that when I tried and now I don't feel like going back to it.

It has some mad groovy beats though.

do you mean "cosmic horror" as in vast emptiness where the mind goes mad, or "cosmic horror" presented by unimaginable biological forces of outter space?
Because, I don't think anything fills the void of first category in vidya (that is unless you count some fanfic-tier novels or the Solus Project and will stop to contemplate for a second that you are sitting on a planet with a completely vanished civilisation)
For the second category I can name a few
>>
>>379136769
>Some native american magic inhabiting the town

Actually the native Americans considered the land to be sacred, so they didn't even lived on it or buried their people in it. The Europeans settlers simply didn't care about native superstitions and built Silent Hill on the sacred land. The energy is ancient.

>or "cosmic horror" presented by unimaginable biological forces of outter space?
That would be like Dead Space 1 with the body horror stuff
In my opinion, Cosmic horror would be like a combination of both categories being the first one the main focus and the second one a way to support it or add the more physical "spooky" horror; a la Lovecraft if you want, "muh huge alien azathoth overlord appears out of nowhere and blah blah" kind of stuff

On a different note, I've always wanted a game like "The temple" from Lovecraft and the only one that comes near that concept is Sunless Sea

that was a really good source mod, like I didn't think source mods could be that good before playing it.

My older brother is insane into the silent hill lore and he expalined it to me but the jist is that
>Land is sacred to indians ancient power ect
>There are 2 gods the god the order wants to awaken and another called melephis or some shit hes the one who builds the worlds you traverse and the reason why there are are so many locks
>The monsters you fight are personification of fear or other negative emotions either the PCs or Alessa's
Its weird and convoluted and sometimes contradictory. If you want SH lore and shit play 1 and 3. 2 is almost a side story.

>>
>>379142693
It's Amnesia, you should be able to recognize that if you browse these threads.
If you haven't played any of their games yet go for Penumbra Overture and then Penumbra Black Plague first.
>>
>>379136481
cosmic horror also has lovecraftian themes, and there are plenty of games that explore it. now, most of these games might not have flashy aliens in them, but most of them deal with an intruder from another world.
amnesia the dark descent comes to mind, which has, spoilers, an antagonist who is exiled from their home dimension.
there is also call of cthulhu, which as as lovecraftian as it gets, the execution is questionable however. spoilers, it includes a protagonist who has alien ancestry and because of his "powers" he has to face the wrath of an elder god mostly by himself.
you also get guns in the latter game, and you are expected to kill quite a few enemies. so, overall, i would say amnesia is the better game.

there is an upcoming horror title called scorn.
i don't know if it takes place in another planet, but if takes place on earth, it is unrecognizable. everything seems to be alive and made of flesh, even the ground and the rocks, and even the main character. it is H.R. giger inspired (the main artist of the alien franchise) so might be the kind of thing you are looking for.
it seems a bit over the top for me personally, i like my horror games realistic. but from what you told me, i think you will like it.

Make sure you collect the red liquid in the hospital. There's a bottle in the kitchen area. Make sure when you're wandering around the part of town near the circus areas you go through the motel and inspect the motorcycle. My memory is a bit foggy so this may not be 100% correct.

Penumbra Black Plague and Silent Hill 1 are the only ones I would call pure 10/10.
The rest of the SH games, dead space, alien isolation, amnesia, cry of fear, soma, condemned are all really good too though.
>>
How do I make sure my horror game never gets ruined by YouTube and Twitchfags? It's going to be a third-person survival horror akin to RE and SH, so it's a start that it won't be first person.
>>
>>379146798
put your real good stuff far in the game, those faggots are surface only
>>
Can a game that gives the player a lot of offensive power be truly scary? Like, the reason classic Resi and SH is scary is because they limit movement and aiming with tank controls. Can a game with DMC3/4 combat be scary?
>>
>>379146546
yeah, and the initial footage didn't look promising at all, at least for me.
these might serve as good alternatives though, they kinda have that fleshy vibe going on, although they lack H.R. Giger:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NE6Yo00ibSw

one of them has you playing as the monster apparently, not sure how to feel about that. and the other one is just way over the top for me. but hey, they might be the closest games to scorn as of now.
and they might also suffer the same fate, seeing that the videos are from 2016.

>Can a game that gives the player a lot of offensive power be truly scary?
I'm gonna say yes but with some conditions
You can't make the player a some kind of demi god with almost 0% chance of dying because of his offensive power
Just give him enough options so he can feel safe and think it will be enough to not die
Then overwhelm his ass or push him to take "live or die" decisions that doesn't take away the fact that he is powerful, is just that he maybe fucked up using his power
>But then, it would all come down to some kind of a pattern
Then randomize the way the enemies work
Kinda like Left 4 dead AI director
>>
>>379146996
I think that it is very possible to give players offensive abilities while also retaining horror aspects.
Limiting movement and offensive abilities themselves is not what make them scary, but the stress and inability to take out threats because of these limitations are. It's a very fine line to walk between putting difficulty on your players and just being annoying or introducing artificial difficulty.
Using DMC as an example; the core fun of the gameplay comes from stylishly defeating enemies and executing combos. You could try to introduce stressors on the player for horror by decreasing health, making bullet sponges, combo breaks, invincible enemies, etc. But this come directly opposed to core gameplay of defeating enemies and is just annoying. It works in horror games because your goal isn't to kick ass, but to run away or do something else.
>>
>>379147718
you can also make them a glass canon and watch them flip their shit and empty the magazine on every little noise.
could be fun, would feel tense having to kill something with one hit HP.
>>
>>379136245
>I've played only Silent Hill 2 but never finished it. Can anyone tell me what's the source of all the creepy shit that's going on there?

>>
>>379148026
limit the line of sight to a small circle around the player.
constantly need resources to keep the circle big.
enemies change their behavior depending on how big your circle of light is.
hallucination enemies (oor the real ones) jump at you from the darkness if your circle of light is small enough, causing you to waste ammo in panic, which is scarce.
and yes, have ammo consuming weapons.
also, having an invincible but a slow monster that is always chasing the player, combined with the circle of light thing might be cool. you die as soon as it gets in your view, and moves slower if your circle of light is small, so there is an incentive to keep the circle of visibility relatively small.
>>
>>379148270
you can't, the players turn is a safe haven where they have time to think which is the enemy of horror and if you take it away from them often enough to be effective it becomes rote
>>
>>379148026
>>379148270

>>
>>379148270
anything that allows you to think and strategise, and gives you time to figure out how enemies work takes away all the thrill.
enemies need to come fast, and be unpredictable.
you simply can't have that in a turn based system.
>>
>>379136057
Dead Space 1 stops being scary like two hours in. 2 and 3 are unnerving at most

>>
>>379148026
Give the player objectives that are not related to killing enemies. In games like this you progress by killing bosses that drop keys or gaining new abilities to blast open new areas. Instead, focus on making the player avoid enemies, and any new abilities given to the player should only help avoid hazards that they couldn't before. Try to avoid player deaths too, you don't want dying to become meaningless.

Not exactly spooky but I'm anxious around water and sometimes, height. When cata hit, I came to quest at thousand needles. I landed on the ship, stood still for a few seconds to affirm my footing, walked around a bit chatting with the goblins hoping for a few quests that I could do on the few dry spots. dotting the western region.

Then I saw the ramp at the middle of the ship into the vast water.

I stared at it for a few seconds, taking in the implication. I immediately took a fly-taxi out without further ado.
Second instance was when I was exploring deephome. I was running along the floating rock formation looking for the alliance airship. Then I ran into the world boss dragon, Xariona. I absolute didnt expect anything up and almost ran into it at full speed. I noped the fuck out faster than a paladin could bubblehearth.
