This is why the sequel can easily top the original. The game is lacking in a lot of ways, carried by an amazing protagonist and the atmosphere of the setting. Most people hated the endgame because they were forced to play as Jack. If they can improve on everything else and give us a decent character to play as it'll come out the better game.

You're not wrong, the atmosphere and John saved a lot of the flaws.

But John Marston occupies the same space as James Sunderland in terms of gaming protagonists. He is the top of the top.

I think they can top the original by making it have more choices in the story and game. They experimented with the whole Honor/Fame system in RDR but John was an upstanding gentleman in cutscenes to most people so being a criminal psycho didn't fit.

His character has a lot of depth, and also hehas principles and an arc throughout the game. The dialogue gives us enough to make him interesting but not too much to keep him mysterious.

GTA V just toned down the ragdoll physics so you don't go flying as far and the gunshot animations don't look as cool. In RDR you can shoot someone in the stomach and they collapse and start crawling before they die.

he's the driving force behind the narrative, to the point that you'll push through the really boring/shitty missions just to see what happens to him. i don't think rockstar is incapable of making another character like him, i just hope they streamline the story and avoid superfluous missions that drag down the pacing. after playing the witcher, i just really got bothered playing RDR for the first time and having to do so many worthless missions for the same asshole just to fully complete one task.
