It just feels so wrong to play Competitive Tetris. At this point, The Tetris Company has fucked up Tetris so much that making it competitive is just balls to the wall retarded.
For starters, at this point making Tetrises is useless, since the game rewards you more for T-Spins: they send up to 1 or 2 more lines than Tetrises, and require less pieces and less grid real estate to work on.

Not only that, since the Tetris Piece RNG is no longer R (you get all 7 pieces in a randomized order without them repeating, then all 7 in a different order, then all 7 in another different order, etc.) and the Hold Piece mechanic making things a LOT easier, there's literally PATTERNS made to make you win the game.
There's T-Spin patterns.
There's Perfect Clear patterns which send UPWARDS OF 11 LINES WORTH OF GARBAGE
There's Combo Patterns.
And if you don't do those patterns in high level play, you're dead. And if you take slightly longer to make them than you're opponent, you're dead too!
And the worst part is, since both players start with different pieces (instead of both of them having the same pieces like in Puyo), even if you're equally matched in speed, skill and pattern recreation, you can STILL lose because your opponent had better RNG that let him hit the Hold button less times than you did.

Meanwhile, Puyo Puyo is a masterpiece of a competitive puzzle game. It hits on all sixes.
Even if your opponent memorized all the fucking chaining patterns, you can fuck him over by throwing a small 2 or 3 chain and blocking his almighty chain if he got greedy.
It's kinda like a fighting game, you hafta see what the opponent is doing, attack accordingly, block and counter his attacks... it's complex and it's fucking fun.

TL;DR
Puyo: Mixups, baits, counters, reads.
Tetris: If I'm faster than you at making these predetermined patterns, I win. Fuck you.

Well, I've seen it in Puyo Puyo as well. I once faced these two guys in a team battle, both were puyo puyo players. They won literally every single match and all they really needed to do was back to back perfect clears. Somehow they found a way to do it perfectly every single time.

Overall I think the entire game has balance issues.

The DS' netplay is dead, my dude. Puyo Puyo 20th Anniversary, while untranslated, has netplay on the 3DS.
You can pretty much start anywhere that isn't SUN, Yo~n and 7. Fever is a rocky start since you'll get used to non-pair pieces.
15th Anniversary has a fan translation on the DS, but again, no netplay.

It's because puyo has a fixed speedcap since you can't fastdrop anything, while tetris players will steadily get faster and faster the higher their rank is. The game is balanced around the assumption the tetris player is fast, so at lower levels nothing they do to puyo players has any lasting effect.

Since you can't chain in Tetris, the game has a handicap so that clearing a line adds to a combo instead. As long as you're clearing lines, you're doing a combo which you see the bar next to the player's screen filling up. Puyo doesn't have an advantage over Tetris like some people are complaining about. You're a a few years late to be incredulous about it.

Tetris is much stronger than Puyo at the top level because of the speed difference. Puyo is limited by how fast (slowly) the soft drop is while Tetris can go as fast as it pleases with hard drop. Thus Tetris can fire off T-spins at such a rate that it's raining two rows of garbage onto the Puyo field every three or four pieces that Puyo gets to place, if not even more frequently. Regardless of how skilled the Puyo player may be, if his opponent is a skilled enough Tetris player then the Puyo player simply has to hope the Tetris player makes a mistake in order to have a chance. At the top level, the battle is always uphill for Puyo because Tetris has a major advantage at the beginning of a match.

Tetris is also a hell of a lot less random than Puyo, there are absolutely zero patterns you can build around in Puyo while Tetris has the conventional for modern Tetris 7 bag system letting them know exactly when they will get what they need. They are also not locked in place just waiting for their long chains to resolve like the puyo player, they can freely do whatever the fuck and keep on racking up line clears while the puyo player has to just sit there and watch his puyos pop.
