He talked Tanabe into making Paper Mario being his characters only with none of the original ones the series was known for. Granted Tanabe was the one that took that as being nothing but toads and shyguys but the point still stands. He also seemed to be annoyed with the early GB Mario titles.

Because Miyamato looks at the Mario universe as like your old cartoons. Where characters are specifically chosen to express a pure concept.
As in the wile coyote, and the road runner. These two characters make zero sense in a realistic universe. But in their own universe, they express a pure concept of a wile hunter, trying to catch an even wilier creature. And that's all there needs to be known, in order to set up the gags.

Mario, Peach, and Bowser's dynamic are akin to Popeye, Olive Oil and Bluto. You clearly understand the dynamic of these characters, and it's all you need in order to set up the gags.

Miyamoto wants to avoid the modern day idea of universe building, where it's all about creating this autisticly interwoven relationships between superfluous characters. Where every character needs an origin, and a race, and parents, and siblings, and friends, and and extensive backstories, and histories, and all that other bullshit.

That's the kind of stuff that does little but pander to the most autistic of fans.

Actually, if you review the Iwata's ask, you'll see that Koizumi originally conceived Rosalina by himself, writing the story in isolation, before showing it to the team.

By the time Miyamoto was introduced to Rosalina, he was confused that another princess had been introduced, when Peach was already in the game. But he allowed it, on the condition that they make Rosalina recognizably larger, in order to distinguish her from Peach.

So Miyamoto didn't help make her. He only allowed the creative team to wiggle room. But I imagine he wasn't happy with the insinuation that Mario and Peach were Rosalina's parents. That's probably why he scrapped it. You have to look at it from Miyamoto's perspective. Even though Koizumi is a team member of his, Mario and Peach are still his most precious characters. And then this other guy is going to make an OC that closely resembles Peach? Except she's from space? And has godlike powers? And Mario and Peach are her parents? That's some deviantart tier shit right there. How could he allow that to become canon?
