Sephiroth is hard to understand because basically there's a struggle going on between him and Jenova over his body, and so it's hard to tell where Sephiroth starts and Jenova ends.
In the beginning before his breakdown Sephiroth is basically the stoic badass type, but he seems to have a somewhat likable personality since people weren't afraid of him and saw him as a hero.
Then he finds out about what he is and somehow goes crazy (I've always interpreted this as the Jenova side of him being dormant and going to the mansion awakened it.)

However in the events of the present (starting from after nibelheim) There is something weird going on where Sephiroth isn't entirely in control of his being.
This culminates in the endgame where it's revealed he was basically being possessed by Jenova, but his mind is freed after you kill his Seraph form.

I think with his character they were going for a fallen hero/ancient evil awakens, but they leave a decent amount of it up to interpretation.

FFV was the best Final Fantasy in terms of gameplay and future games should look into having an indepth job system like it.

First off he's dead. Cloud kills him in Nibelheim. Second off, he's merged with Jenova and all other Jenova clones, his actual role is confusing, he seems to be the leader of this grand cult of clones/Jenova seeking the destruction of the world. His whole plan is to summon a meteor to destroy the planet in order to harvest its energy and do something with it, not really sure.

Honestly, he's basically just an obstacle that Cloud needs to overcome not only to save the world, but to overcome his past and gain his own identity. You can see how some of the games are more or less like direct attempts at expanding or refining content used in previous games.
V is a second attempt at III's job system, IX is an iteration over IV's locked class system with more systems added on top for skill and spell acquiral, and VII and VIII tried to expand in different ways on VI's concept of character growth being influenced by what kind of summons they have equipped. However, the retranslation actually re-scripts the game and has Reno appear AFTER Aeris says "It was just bad timing, that's all." So rather than fix the translation (which they obviously knew wasn't right), they changed the game itself. Image attached as proof of this.

But they're not entirely incompetent. Later when you're being chased through the church, Cloud tells Aeris to jump across a gap. He then says:
だいじょうぶだ。俺が受け止めてやる
Which translates to "It'll be okay. I'll catch you."

Official translation translates this to
Cloud: All right. I'll hold them off.
And retranslation correctly translates it to
Cloud: It'll be all right. I'll catch you.

So in the end, I guess it's still going to be hit and miss, as is usually the case with translations.

Grandia 1 and 2 are decent for a one or two times through but gets pretty annoying . Dont play 3. I hate that game. None of the games are related story wise. If you like randomized dungeons and a lot of custom crap then play grandia xtreme. Good luck hunting down all the best stuff in xtreme though. its pretty gawd awful. FF7 is an important landmark game and has some great locations/environments, but ultimately is worse than earlier 2D games and later 3D games.

Sephiroth is a genetic experiment. JENOVA is an alien "Lavos" lifeform that crashes into planets and eats up all the life energy and uses the dead planet to crash into a new one. Jenova's signature ability is to morph and assimilate local lifeforms into itself. Jenova was put into a sort of Coma by a near extinct species of humans known as the cetra or "ancients" who can speak to the planet and are very magical. The Shinra scientist Hojo impregnated a scientist named Lucretia and injected her with cells from the dormant JENOVA when Sephiroth was in the womb. Sephiroth was amazingly adept at many things and grew up monitored by Shinra scientists and became a world renowned Soldier due to his abilities. Sephiroth much later read some books in an old Shinra building that mistakenly documented his experiment and said JENOVA was the corpse of an Ancient, and explained what those were. From then on Sephiroth went insane and thought he was the last surviving Ancient and the heir of the planet that normal humans took from his ancestors. He destroys Clouds village and is nearly killed by him.

Later on he randomly resurfaces speaking of a "Reunion" which is what happens when JENOVA gathers all with its cells back to combine with the main body. Cloud, having been caught by Shinra forces when Sephiroth dissappeared, was injected with the cells as well which is why he is compelled to chase Sephiroth everywhere. He is genetically predisposed to do so due to the Reunion of the parasitic collective.

Later in the game you find out that the Sephiroth you're chasing ISN'T HIM but a Morphic extension of JENOVA luring you into doing shit for her/it, and when you find Sephiroth he is literally half a body encased in crystallized lifestream controlling shit through his/it's will across the world.

Sephiroth thought he was the heir to the planet due to misjudged Shinra research and how he always felt different and special his whole life.

I might be mistaken, since I haven't played the game to completion, but I believe Suikoden II has a thing where after the final boss battle, when the crisis is resolved and the stakes have been dealt with, at some point during the ending you have the option of having a final 1x1 fight against your rival to settle things for the sake of your own personal egos and convictions and whatnot.

I'm not 100% sure if that's exactly how it goes, but I consider that to be the "golden standard" for mirror fights. Make it so you have to kill the building-sized pile malformed body parts, horns and angel wings to save the world, and after that, do whatever the hell you want.

FFX is a game that skirts the line on this matter, though. Jecht is quite obviously the dramatic focus and the intended final boss, but Yu Yevon isn't just a nobody that's been annoying you for the entire game you get to settle a score with, he's the real power behind the events of the game, has gotten a non-negligible amount of hype from Yunalesca and the Maesters, and you can't consider the danger to be over until he's dead. I don't rightly know how I feel about him, but I guess the fact that you have to fight your own aeons through the fight makes it suitably dramatic, even if it's not really a challenge in the difficulty sense.

Not only does Hojo literally spell it out for you, the Ultimania guides written as a canon guide to the universe literally state both that Sephiroth learned how to control Jenova cells from the livestream and learned the nature of the planet while in there, and that Jenova is operating entirely according to his will (meaning that Jenova NO LONGER HAS ONE OF IT'S OWN.)

Sephiroth didn't fall under any control whatsoever, and trying to portray it as such just cheapens him as a villain. He went insane, floated around in the lifestream and realized he could become a planet surfing god, and decided "that's the life for me!" and began recreating his original body.

If you cannot go back into past the snow area in gaeas cliff then yes Trine is missable but skills like aqualung can still be learned. The enemy that cast aqualung can actually be learned from a chocobo enemy encounter by gold saucer. Pandora's box is the biggest concern because it is only cast once before you make the final descent to sephiroth. Ill have to load a save file up to confirm the Trine thing. I am fairly you can miss after your first visit to geae's cliff.

VII's issues are just too big to ignore. People rack on VIII for using memory loss as a plot point, meanwhile VII turns the most basic fucking story about beating up an evil guy with a long sword into a cacophony of ayys and mind control, THE PLANET and an entire subplot about machine vs nature which amounts to absolutely nothing.

In one of the cut scenes from the game, Barret admits that he never even gave a shit about saving the planet, he just wanted revenge against SHIN-RA. While this does strengthen him as a character, it was cut because it blatantly spells out that, whoops, the best part of the game had no point because we have no fucking idea what we're doing.

replying to my own post sadly... apparently you can learn trine from godo so trine can be gotten on disc 2 or 3 if you save yuffies side quest for either of those discs. it is possible to get trine on all enemy skill materia. Magic breath can be learned from parasites in the northern crater as well. it is possible to have 3 full enemy skill materia as far as i can tell.
