About 75% of all the memes are in the challenges (and they are plenty). The rest are hidden through easter eggs and dialogue.

That said even when it's not referencing memes the humor feels like it's trying to be a meme if you get what I mean. Some characters overreact in ways that attempt to be funny but get grating after a while, especially Tina. I don't have it but someone should post that screencap of the random anon copying Borderlands character dialogue and how it sounds exactly like something from the game, then you'd see what I mean.

When people call BL2 a meme-game they're not talking about actual memes or references, they're talking about how the game goes for random humor occasionally, and how it will repeat specific jokes and phrases over and over the way a meme will be repeated (ANNNND... OOOPEN!). It does the silly tongue in cheek jokes like "I'm obviously going to betray you! haha I'll say this again 12 times before I actually betray you, which I will do!" multiple times too, in fact that was the most common joke in TWO of the DLC (Pirates and Torgue).

Note that it's not a bad thing the way /v/ pretends it is. The game has a style beyond some generic boring ass game, just compare the bland BL1 with the happy-silly BL2. Fedora-neckbeards will go "this low-class humor is far too unsophisticated for the likes of me", but really that's meaningless fake elitism.

There are some memes, but it's mostly just shit humor.

I wouldn't exactly call Borderlands 1 bland in comparison to BL2. It's been a while since I played it and I can't for the life of me remember much about it, but the writing perfectly complemented the setting, especially one of the earlier side quests when you found audio dialogues on one scientist or the blind dude.

I've been playing BL2 recently as well. It's pretty dumb, but I like the loot'n'shoot gameplay loop, and there is some writing that I enjoy.

The Caustic Caverns questline with the Blue crystal creature was kinda interesting, and taken seriously. Another one that stuck out was the Overlook questline with the shields, dumb but amusing.

BL2 becomes infinitely more enjoyable if you turn the voice volume all the way down and disable subtitles.
You get waypoints on your minimap, so it's not like you're missing out on directions or anything.

I played borderland 1 recently and the setting was actually kind of dark. I wouldn't say I like or it hate it more than BL2 but it's pretty interesting how different the two games are in that regard

I kinda miss the gore though, seeing people's heads pop off after you kill them with shock damage was pretty cool, or straight up blowing off limps or torsos.

If every character was as well written as this motherfucker the game would be perfect. B1 was halfway decent by making everybody slightly unhinged. B2 pushed that stuff downhill by making everyone in Sanctuary a selfrightous cunt who jerks your ego off as hard as possible. Jack was a well written villain when he was just like the bandits but wore a suit. PS fucked it all up so badly, such a shame it had the best gameplay.
