First of all, your "now" example isn't an RTS, it's a 4X/grand strategy hybrid. Second, the picture you used is deliberately set up to make it look far more confusing than it is.

If you want a good recent-ish RTS game, go look at something like Deserts of Kharak. Which was a great game that got ignored by fucking everyone because all the cool kids are too busy playing fucking DOTA.

No they weren't, even ASCII games weren't as boring as the current "RTS" genre.

Grand strategies have always been like that. It's not like RTS devs went on to make grand strategies. I'm not sure why the RTS genre died though, I remember there was an oversaturation of them during the 2000's so maybe too many of them weren't successful and now editors won't risk it. Plus Starcraft crushing everyone else.

Yeah this is really unfortunate. It still has a loyal playerbase including me, but it's a small one. As I said, everyone ignored it because it wasn't a MOBA. Also didn't help that it didn't get much of a marketing budget compared to shit like DOW3.
