because hunters was released in a time where we still had other relatively recent metroid games, it was an okay spinoff, it still felt like a metroid game even though the single player mode was an afterthought.

Federation force was released after years of radio silence, and the first thing they showed about it was a fucking soccer game.

They also changed the artstyle to something god awful, and downgraded the gameplay from hunters that was actually really good if you got used to it, even though you'd only be able to play an hour at a time tops before having your hand hurt.

I don't understand. Metroidvania games are not hard to make. Look on Steam, there are countless genuinely good games developed by small teams, some as small as one or two people, that ape Metroid, and add their own twist to things.

Why does Nintendo have such a hard time just making one? Is it figuring out how to sell a game that's worth $60? Is that it? Other M did come at the cusp of where all these indie games were starting to be released. If they tried to do a new one, they'd have to compete in that market.

You guys ever play Star Wars: Republic Commando? It's basically the exact premise of FF, but done in Star Wars, and correctly. You play as a bunch of storm troopers with squad-based mechanics, and travel through areas that could have been straight up ripped from one of the Prime games. It's near visually spot on.

Federation force isn't just a shitty metroid game, it's a shitty game in all respects. You're supposed to be piloting a mech and fighting giant monsters and elite pirates, but the art and level design is so fucking bad that there is zero environmental context to suggest you're anything other than a stupid cartoon astronaut waddling around with shit in his pants.

This game could have been so fucking cool, Federation mech pilots airdropped into one of Metroid's worst nightmare worlds and having to solve huge environmental puzzles and fighting giant raid bosses in the vein of kraid and quadraxis, like a way cooler Borderlands with customizable classes and a shit ton of metroid's craziest weapons.

There is no one left at Nintendo who knows how to make a Metroid game, to the point that even spinoffs are dogshit. Metroid is finished.

As much as everyone clamors for another 2D Metroid I don't think that's what the series needs at the moment. What needs to be done is revive Metroid by way of Breath of the Wild treatment, that is completely revamping the Metroid formula while still staying true to its core gameplay and ideas.

For Metroid, that could mean a Prime style game but with space combat and exploration/trading sim.

You might have autism. It's a first person Metroid i.e. a Prime game. Hunters was a prime game too, even pinball was a prime game. It's not like the Prime series is some highly honored thing. Hunters was an FPS on the DS, there's the pinball game, Prime 2 is half assed (recycle Prime 1 assets and light/dark world padding), while 3 is the RotJ of the series (good moments, weakest overall of the trilogy).
