what the fuck am i supposed to do? i feel like i'm failing to grasp some basic part of the game, because this motherfucker just stunlocks the absolute christ out of me every time i blink. first phase isn't so bad, but literally every attack in his second phase seems to be part of a stunlock combo, and i just get torn the fuck up.

You need to play outrageously safe in the second phase as random hyper armor can fuck you
Just do a few rush attacks and back off. Also you can cheese the whole game with 20 health items so nothing really matters unless you forbid yourself from healing
