Now that the dust has settled, what does /v/ think of this 2 million dollar video game personally?

Serves them right for being retarded about JonTron

Fuck "spiritual successors". Yooka Laylee took the same gameplay but had god awful character designs. Rap Rabbit is making the gameplay more complex but the character design is, again, awful, and isn't even similar to that of Parappa or Gitaroo Man.

It makes Mighty No 9 look like Megaman 11.

I was skeptical about Yooka Laylee from the start. When Jon got the boot I knew it was just PR stunt. You can't criticize YL without someone going "lol ur just mad that Jontron got the boot"
>>
It's meh, nothing stands out about it

How come the switch version still isn't out?

This game is the perfect example of well-meaning developers attempting to revive a dead genre and accidentally reminding everyone why the genre died.
>>
>>378973995
>It makes Mighty No 9 look like Megaman 11.

What makes you say that? People generally feel that Yooka Laylee was handled and plays better, at least compared to Mighty Number 9.

It doesn't live up to the hype of being a successor to Banjo, but it's not a bad game on its own merits.

I'm not sure what people really expect from platformers anymore. They're almost always formulaic collectathons. That's either your cup of tea or it isn't.
>>
reminder that the good rare devs left long ago, playtonic devs just had the luck to serve coffee during Banjo's development
>>
>>378974459

No it's not.

It's the perfect example of developers attempting to revive a dead genre who were but tiny contributors to the genre within their respective roles, really didn't fully understand what made them great and sure as fuck didn't have the programming prowess to back up reproducing them so ended up with a hobbled together mess of off the shelf Unity store mechanics and features.

It's shit because it's shit, not because the genre was shit.

That's only because it plays closer to Banjo Kazooie than MN9 played like Megaman.
>>
>>378973306
It was decent.

I wasn't expecting Banjo Threeie like most others were so I wasn't very disappointed. Banjo Tooie is still the best game. I hope they use those extra funds to make a better sequel.

Is this one of those "Playtonic devs totally didn't have lead roles in Rare you guys" posts?
>>
After reading reviews and watching gameplay I've come to the conclusion that i don't really care about it anymore.
The hype carried the game far, and without it I realize I'm glad I didn't spend any money on it
>>
>>378973306
I really enjoyed it. It wasn't GOTYAY or anything but they delivered what they promised. I'm curious to see what the DLC will be and what their plans for YL2 are.
>>
>>378975381

No, it's a "Playtonic devs don't have the game design experience, programming knowledge or artistic talent to make a decent platformer" posts.

Yooka Laylee proved that beyond a shadow of a doubt.
>>
>>378974868
Face it.

Collectathon platformers were blown the fuck out by actual platformers that took the player to cool new places each level instead of forcing them to double back because they got a slightly different jump.

The likes of Crash Bandicoot and Rayman 2 make Rare's games look like shit.

It was a fun callback to collectathon games as it was supposed to be. It wasn't the second coming of Christ, and I think the Banjo games are better, but anyone who got hyped up and then disappointed has only themselves to blame as is the case with any hyped up video game release.

I actually liked a lot of the character designs, I think what made many of them look strange was the shading and the unity engine itself rather than the designs. Of course there are exceptions to that, like the family of shopping carts that hang out in a swamp for some reason.

>Face it.

Face what? Seriously, you fucks need to quit acting like full blown spergs and actually read posts.

And Rayman 2 was fucking great, where in my post did I say only Rare's shit was good?

There are TONS of great 3D platformers out there, Yooka Laylee simply isn't one of them for the reasons I stated.

That's basically how I felt, and I had absolutely zero hype for the game. It's just an okay game that's getting way too much shit for not being a 11/10 masterpiece. I think that the quill placement is this game's biggest fault. You'd sometimes find just ONE quill hanging out in some obscure part of the level whereas the Banjo games placed them in areas that felt more natural. I get why they did it, only having five worlds and all, but having 200 of them in each world was really overkill and made you get sick of the worlds trying to find so many quills.

Ironically, even after having 200 quills in each world, the game still feels surprisingly empty in terms of collectibles. I think an easy remedy to this is to bring back actual ammo for Yooka's fire/ice/water breathing moves, rather than have that irritating timed mechanic. That way there's less barren areas and certain challenges are far less annoying. I'm also not entirely sold on the stamina bar. I appreciate what they tried to do with it, but for moves like the rolling technique it really didn't need to be tied to a stamina bar, since you use it so often. Upgrading the bar and using a tonic basically negates this issue, but the fact that I have to do that in the first place is a problem in itself.

Oh, and Rextro's games were dumb and didn't really add anything to the overall gameplay. Having to play them twice doesn't help either.

>Of course there are exceptions to that, like the family of shopping carts that hang out in a swamp for some reason.

I think that's a reference to how some hobos will steal grocery carts and bring them to the woods where they live, and so in some areas you can find a bunch of rusted old grocery carts seemingly randomly in the middle of the woods. I've seen it a few times myself, but apparently it happens in Bongland too since that's where the devs live. Personally, I thought that they were okay, but they are definitely the weakest of the NPCs by far.

I would have preferred multiple smaller worlds instead of fewer bigger ones. The levels in Banjo seemed more densely packed with stuff than the levels in Yooka Laylee, so even though the levels in Yooka Laylee were bigger there wasn't any more to do. That was my biggest problem with the game.

I never got all the quills or all the music notes in their respective games, so the placement didn't matter as much to me, but I can see why it would bother somebody, and some of the quill placement was questionable even to someone like myself who wasn't going for 100% completion.

So basically it was a game that was fun enough but could have been a lot better. I didn't expect it to be on the same level as Banjo in the first place, so I wasn't let down when it wasn't. The amount of hate it gets in unwarranted. There are legitimate criticisms to be made about the game, but it's not Mighty Number 9 levels of awful.
>>
I got exactly what I wanted, but nothing in the game particularly wowed me, I actually felt tired of the game about halfway through. Collecathons are harder now that I'm an adult without limitless free time
