I'll bet that you don't know anything about the industry.
They did it here because it was a new thing, it was one of the best, if not THE best looking games at the time and they wanted to showcase that.
It was about the physics, looks, etc.

In THE CURRENT YEAR most games just look good so there are trailers that showcase story and eventual gameplay mechanics there is no reason to do a tech demo (altrough some still do it in form of "gameplay trailers" but they still mostly feature the story)

Back then PC exclusives were constantly pushing boundaries so you could show off videos like that to impress people, now with Consoles being the main platforms of choice, games are stagnant as fuck both tech wise & gameplay wise, no one would be impressed with a 20 minute tech video on say Battlefield 1 because there is nothing there gameplay wise & the graphics are stock standard
