She says the star will eventually fade back into her realm regardless, she's just giving the Dragonborn the opportunity to cleanse it for it's remaining time on Tamriel. She's not talking shit, Azura's Star is constantly disappearing and reappearing and in canon Oblivion it's even destroyed and yet it still exists in Skyrim. She dumps it on Tamriel ever now and again but it always returns to her realm.

It's already fully corrupted, the problem is it doesn't work as a soul gem anymore because of Malyn's magic. Regardless of what you do to it's enchantment it's a piece of Azura's realm and it will return to it eventually.
