Racing games are usually for people who want to mod virtual cars and people into car culture.

Look at why NFS:UG2 is so highly regarded and same with Forza H3. Compare those to games like The Crew or NFS The Run. Games with less customization etc, in favor of a "story"

Racing games are niche and all they doing is aliening their target demographic, it's like if Mass Effect dropped it's story for big COD like set pieces

It's funny because the Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift game has virtually nothing to do with the movie and was actually good, but it's PS2 exclusive and doesn't emulate well so nobody has really heard of it.
