I put over 1000 hours into darksouls 2, I've put 8 hours into sotfs.

It's complete shit. Literally a child ran through the maps with a copy paste tool and just pasted 40 more enemies in every area in completely obtuse annoying locations for the first 3-4 ares.

Then they got bored and the rest of the game is 100% the same literally.

I died A LOT of times to him, and I also thought that it was very unfair. But you have to learn how to dodge all his attacks.

The worst attack that he has are the fireballs because they are difficult to avoid, and sometimes it's difficult to be far from him when he does it. It's part luck and part knowing what to do.

I am playing through Dark Souls 2 SOTFS and how come I can't use the White Soapstone? Its greyed out when I have it selected in my item slot and I tried it at different max HP levels from 100% to 50%(drop by 10% per death and stops at 50% unless you have Ring of Binding which drops it by 5% and stops at 75% max HP) and still doesn't work. That's not why people disliked Smelter. It was mostly because of two reasons.

a.) the overhead had a really really bad hitbox.

b.) scrubs who can't deal with identical attacks that require different roll timings as well as delayed hits in combos.

depending on your build, you could try my kind of retarded strat of using a greatshield in phase 1 and switch to two handing in phase 2. I found his phase 1 attacks much more relentless with the only real issue in phase 2 was him randomly stringing an extra attack onto the end of a combo so its never 100% certain when its safe.

You can definitely heal when fighting him, but I agree that he is basically the culmination of a pattern of bosses in DaS2 whose windows are unreasonably small and hard to predict.

He's difficult, but not the fun kind of difficult. I much prefer a boss like Artorias, whose moveset was actually discernably varied. With Raime and many other DaS2 bosses, the correct response to most of their attacks is to dodge backwards, or forwards if you're feeling brave. With Artorias, you're liable to get hit if you don't vary your dodge direction depending on the attack (jump slams, running thrust, etc). Artorias also has really good windows, especially his charge-up. You can either try to interrupt it or heal and face the damage buff. Bosses buffing in DaS2 usually have a massive damage reduction, further evidence of their extreme aversion to balanced windows in 2.

The whole "big dude with armor" aspect of DaS2 is disappointing, but what I find really disappointing is that they all tend to play the same way. I find there are far fewer bosses in 2 that I actually enjoy fighting, whereas I always look forward to getting to Artorias and Manus as the real tests of whether or not I've mastered my build.
