What's your favorite walking simulator? What do you think about walking sims in general?

/v/'s favorite walking simulator is the first few hours of Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. They seem to have really loved it since they were so butthurt that it turned into an actual game and you got guns halfway though.

Only time I've ever seen /v/ butthurt than a game with no gameplay suddenly got gameplay.
>>
>>378867443
That game was atrocious regardless
>>
>>378867836

Kill yourself.

It's a 10/10, if it didn't have so many glitches, and that's Bethesda's fault for not bug testing it when they told the devs they'd do it for them.
>>
Gone Home is top comfy, so is Dear Esther
>>
>>378868128
Dear Esther was great, Gone Home not so much
>>
>>378866962
I don't mind them, but I don't really spend cash on them. The only one I beat to completion was Gone Home and I hated the second half of it.
Soma seems it would be up my alley. And I guess RE7 would be my favorite if you believe the memes.
>>
>>378867953
>it's perfect, especially if it didn't have its flaws.

Not him but the game was only neat, not particularly good. Solid gun play though.
>>
>>378868856

I respect your opinion because you liked the great gunplay. But I still disagree, something about this game got me really hooked. Literally one of my favorite games of all time.
>>
>>378866962
Most of them are fucking retarded, but I did play The Stanley Parable a few days ago, and it was great. I wouldn't pay more than $5 for it though, because of how short it was, even getting all the endings.

Why does /v/ get so incredibly butthurt over walking simulators? They are what they are and if you're not in the mood for it you can always play some shooter
>>
>>378866962
I live in Virginia and this game was a complete fucking let down because none of it felt like any fucking part of Virginia

I own all the games too.
I have to be in the mood to play mellow games like these

Yeah, whoever thinks walking dead season 2 and life is strange are walking simulators, is a dumbass

I know but I included them as they are more passive type of games imo.
Similar to walking sims, I need to be in a certain mood to play them.
I prefer action/adventure games in most cases. At least games that are more active.

SOMA is excellent. Not sure if it's really a walking sim, but that's what people call it.
>>
>>
>>378871075
this is an underrated one
>>
>>378871305
It's a walking sim until you meet that guy in the diving suit towards the end who charges you from anywhere and constantly sees you.
>>
>>378866962
Why do all hipster games have this pseudo low poly imagery? Are features mushy like that because that's how they view the world? Not commiting to texture, flavor or detail, just broad quasi stylistic strokes?
>>
I pity people who get butthurt over walking sims, they'll never be wrapped up in the covers with a joint and a coffee playing Gone Home while it's dark and raining outside
>>
>>378871605
FINALLY SOMEONE FUCKING GETS IT
>>
>>378871305
It's worse than walking sim because it pretends it has gameplay.

>meet disco ball head guy
>he bumps at you
>you fall down and continue with him being conveniently displace

I actually stopped playing then and there. Nice imagery but completely dead environment (not in an aesthetic but in a gameplay sense). Frictional is a horrible dev.
>>
>>378871605
Jesus nigger just play VtMB where it takes some effort to find nooks and crannies.
>>

This is how you know /v/ has gone to shit.
>>

If you remove all the chase scenes with trial and error gameplay and the rape school from it, Outlast 2 would actually make a pretty good walking sim.
>>
>>378872014
Playing low effort shit like gone home is not variety, it's lack of appreciation for effort.

kek, what a strange mindset to have about games, I suppose you exclusively play Dark Souls and collect achievements?
>>
>>378871754
Seriously? One strike takes away half your health. Second hit, you're dead. Must be tough having such a short temper and low attention span, you missed a great experience.
>>
>>378866962
I had fun playing the Stanley Parable, probably due to the narrator's voice which I really enjoy.
>>
i thought the long dark was pretty cool
>>
Do puzzle games like Obduction count as walking simulators? If so, I think that's my favorite genre.

Infra was also a pretty good lesser known game. It starts off as a really basic walking simulator, but as you progress it adds puzzle and platforming elements, so it's not just purely a walking simulator.

Stanley Parable is pretty good.

Journey is THE most overrated game I've ever played. I would honestly have forgotten about it, if not for the fact everyone jizzed their pants over it.
>>
NaissancE is pretty good, especially if you like Blame! and architecture porn, but they ruined it by pulling some pseudo-psychological 2deep4u bullshit towards the end of the game that completely ruined the experience for me.
>>
>>378872372
I actually only care about map design in dark souls but that's the point, map design there took some effort.

>>378872378
nigger they remove enemies altogether once you die. what is there to miss? the setting is interesting but the story is told through infodumps like everything jubert does. it's horrible design. it's even more prominent in that croteam logic puzzle where you do these portal 2.0 fun riddles and then there's a terminal and oh look another jubert infodump with copypasted greek philosophy for good measure.

>>

>>
>>378873862
No they don't, you're confusing this with one of the Amnesia games.
>What's there to miss?
Everything. You literally played one of the first areas of the game. I'm guessing well-made scifi body horror with great audio- and visual design just doesn't interest you, so whatever.
>>
>>378866962
I love them, haven't played some of the biggest, like Dear Esther, or Gone Home, though.
My favourite game of 2016 was Firewatch.
Also, I was hoping for Kona to be good, but the full game turned out to be awful.
>>378871305
>>378871429
Is it good? There's two games: Pathologic and The Void that get called walking sim, too.

The Stanley Parable is probably the peak of the genre.

It's great. It's a pretty depressing story about AI and human consciousness, with some horrific abominations resulting from an AI fulfilling it's directive of keeping humans alive in an apocalyptic scenario, without actually understanding what it means to be alive.

>>378876175
Not an argument, every game has info dumps.

I don't think that it's required so much as there are almost no third person games that do it.

But Journey's been posted in this thread, if we're counting that I don't think FP matters.

The beginning of The Void makes it look like a walking sim, but shortly into the game it becomes a really difficult resource management / role-playing / waifu simulator game. I managed to beat it with savescumming, but the devs have since released easy and medium patches.
>>
>>378871529
it's partially style, part budget(not needing to spend time with high-detail models, and fixing performance issues that come with high-detail models), but it's also future-proofing in some respects, as stylized graphics are able to (in some sense) remain more timeless than "latest gen realistic graphics".
