How long until Valve fires all of its developers and becomes Steam only?

Should have already happened. Real question is why any of them are still there right now at all
>>
>and people actually think Half Life 3 will ever exist
At this point, the hype and exaggeration behind that game is what is going to kill it the most. No matter what the do, no one will be satisfied. It's become such a huge meme, that the only thing left will be disappointment.

Though I guess Valve couldn't give a shit about that, and just decided to permanently delay it. They have such a fucking choke hold on the market, that they'll make billions regardless.
>>
>>378868252
Come to think of it, Half-Life is their only original IP. Even Portal started as a mod.

Daily reminder that a proper Half-Life sequel/follow-up is never going to happen (I wouldn't rule out the chances of a VR title or some sort of spin-off though).

Half-Life 2 Episode 3 got put on the backburner during 2008 due to the surprising mass success of Portal (which prompted a lot of people to start working on some sort of sequel), TF2's free update plan (which served as a testing ground for various things, including cosmetic microtransactions and F2P, which led to Dota 2), Left 4 Dead (which was almost immediately followed by L4D2, that ended up burning out a lot of people), Steam's rising popularity, and various other factors. Interest in another Half-Life never picked up during all that craziness, people either left or are more content to work on other things at Valve.

they missed the boat on that one.

They're leaving because they've finished. HL3 has been held at a high level of completion for years, waiting for a good enough reason to ship. The need to give VR a boost, and break their general silence in grand fashion, has been accepted as a good enough reason.

L4D3 + HL3 + ??? = Orange Box 2. Should be this year, announced possibly at E3, possibly at Steam Dev Days in October. Announcement will be within same quarter as release.

>>378866361

Valve has been hiring and firing devs to lock their IP's for years and years. Any time a truly innovative Source-based product is going to hit the market, Valve buys it up and locks it up- much like car companies who keep purchasing water-powered and electric-powered car patents.
>>
>valve
>ever making games when they can sit back and make steam/DOTA money

They should just farm out their IPs at this point.
>>
>>378873797
What
>>
>>378873815
One assumes they have some artistic interest in the medium. Not everyone joins just to make money. In fact, Valve is in a position where they really can pursue whatever they want and that's probably exactly what they do splintered off into little teams. Problem is, lack of general leadership probably none of these projects ever go anywhere.
>>
>>378873872
Gold Src was built upon the Quake engine.
>GoldSrc (also known as Goldsource) was a game engine used internally by Valve Corporation. It was a heavily modified Quake engine that debuted with the release of their science fiction first-person shooter video game Half-Life.

>>
>>378874363
No the prices are literally better despite the piracy and they sell a shit ton.

There's a reason why it's called the Quake engine. It was specifically made for Quake, unlike say Id Tech 2.

What are you talking about? Its been always this way, from the lightbulb cartel making 1000 hour lightbulbs, Edison trying to jew DC into your great grand dad farm, blacksmiths using cheaper methods in swords so they had to be replaced in a shorter time, and arab rug makers selling termite infested rugs so you had to buy a new one a couple of years later

this is complete and total bullshit. it doesn't even make any fucking sense - any examples you're going to be able to come up with are going to be RELEASED PRODUCTS. not things they bought up and locked away.

>The year before the Bug War began, a group of Mormon extremists settled on the planet Dantana, a world which was cordoned off by the Federation as part of the Arachnid Quarantine Zone. The Mormons, however, disregarded the Federation's warning, and a month later Port Joe Smith was slaughtered by Arachnid warriors.

>>
>>378877087
>who were the benefactors

Is this a mystery? I thought it was just Breen's euphemism for the Combine leadership. He was saying that humanity had been given an opportunity to step forward into a new phase of evolution thanks to the technology of the Combine.

What's unclear is whether he ever actually believed this or if it was always just a lie. It's clear that by the end of HL2 he no longer cares for the fate of humanity, but when he first made a deal with the Advisors his motives might've been more noble.

Left4Dead was a Valve/TurtleRock partnership from the start, then Valve totally acquired it before release. L4D2 was entirely internally developed.

CS:GO initial development was licensed out, but later moved entirely in-house after release.

Portal was 100% in-house, based on the senior project of a team of Digipen students Valve hired (based on the strength of their senior project).

Dishonored was a Valve/Arkane partnership that Valve let go after it failed to develop into the multiplayer-focused concept they wanted. They had also been working with Arkane on Half-Life branded projects (would-have-been Episode 4 and 5).

CastAR was an alternate take on VR tech developed entirely in-house that they gave away to the internal team responsible after firing them.

All their VR stuff so far has been 100% in-house. Probably they've acquired Budget Cuts? It seems that way.

Anyway I'm 85% convinced Valvo is completely dead, though it may revive itself in the distant future. Steam's alright but a lot of my nostalgic memories will die with Valve as an actual development company rather than a microtransaction-laden storefront.
>>
I heard the problem with Valve/Steam making new games is that in theory people have the freedom to do it, they can get together a team and work on something.

Just sometimes Valve goes "this is really nice guys, but it doesn't fit our image, maybe you can spin off into your own studio", sometimes whoever is working on their opus can't keep people on it because they get pulled onto other projects.
