>tfw wasted my life playing vidya instead of learning how to make vidya
I'm learning Game Maker Studio right now and while it's not incredibly difficult especially with it being established for a while and having other people who know the language, but I feel like it's too little too late. I'm 23 and this is my first game. I've never written short stories that were original and good, I never learned how to draw either classically or in pixel art, I learned piano as a kid and can follow along on sheet music and play a song provided you give me the sheet music and like a month to practice but I can't compose.

At this point I'm even having trouble coming up with ideas for a simple gimmick for a game, let alone a plot.

Meanwhile there's people like Toby Fox who was a musician to begin with, plus he had an in with a popular webcomic creator so he already had his soundtrack plus writing skills/style that I would assume he picked up from Hussie. Plus all these ideas he had that are obvious in hindsight yet no one ever came up with makes me like enviously respect him. Meanwhile I'm the kind of person who struggles with basic calculus and does math in circles and will only "get it" once I see someone else do it.

I wake up at 7, get to work at 8, leave for school at 3, get home at 5, stare at a blank screen trying to come up with ideas until 11 before going to bed wnd starting the cycle anew. At this rate I'll be lucky to get a job as a code monkey which even then I doubt since I've been in community college since 2011 and am set to transfer in fall 2018 provided I don't fail my math course for a third time and lock myself into academic probation at which point I have to take 12 credits in a semester to try again meaning I'd be full time student with a 30 hour workweek.

Life is suffering and at this point I'm seriously thinking that it's exit bag time.
>>
speaking of the devil, I just found a job in some kind of paint factory

so...uh...chin up? :^)

>I learned piano as a kid and can follow along on sheet music and play a song provided you give me the sheet music and like a month to practice but I can't compose.
at least you can play the piano, I started late and now not playing anymore. and knew less then you.

also why is it taking you 2 hours to get home?, a lot of wasted time
>>
I wake up at 7, have enough energy to be productive and/or focus for one (1) hour per day, then lie in bed, sleep an hour here and there, do meaningless shit like browse /v/ or watch television shows just to pass the time for the rest of the day.

>tfw too tired for vidya
>tfw too tired for anything

somone please shoot me in the head
>>
>>378863860
Out of practice. I could still play it though but you'd need to give me time to shake the rust off.

Class is typically an hour and a half. Starts at 3 and ends at 4:30, get home at 5.
>>
So... you're a visual learner? Don't kick yourself hard, you're not the only one. Keep brainstorming. If you feel yourself struggling and hitting your limit, be aware of that's how an individual grows.

Coming from an anon who's in the same situation. Learn time management, organization, entrepreneurship, wealth management, etc...
>>
If you think you're too old for something or it's too late for something - just fucking kill yourself please.

You literally only have one life, you yourself said you "wasted" your time playing vidya - now you're gonna quit because it's "too late?"

I know a 60 year old woman who takes piano classes. I've been in class sitting next to 50 year old men who work a day job.

But hey, give up because you're a 23 year old and it's too late. You're so old, you have no chance.

You worry too much. You're just 23, you're basically a child. At least in my eyes.

If you can't come up with a gimmick, why not try to make a game without one? Why make a platformer that uses the color of your mood ring to determine your jump height, instead of just cloning mario and learning by this process?

I started coding when I was 21. I'm 28 now and full time employed in the automobile sector as a software developer.

Issue is I start coming up with enemy names and items and stuff and I don't even have a story that I don't immediately dismiss as either stupid, overplayed, or a ripoff.

I honestly only have an item and an enemy that I'm genuinely proud of.

>time management
I'm going to just pull vidya's hooks out of me any day now. I need to work on learning so I can make. I should probably move my laptop into a different room than my Xbox.
>>
>>378863993
Same. I'm so desperate I'm trying exercise.
>>
>>378864482
First thing I'm going to make once I get comfortable is a Bosconian clone. I've made Asteroids already through tutorial. But past that I don't know man.
>>
>>378864492
I think you have a lot of potential to be successful in whatever you pursue. I just want to challenge you to stop doubting yourself because that will get you nowhere. You have an idea, now mold it and refine it, but don't dismiss it. It'll probably seem uncool to you, but it'll most likely be awesome, and even inspiring, to someone else.

And keep playing vidya. I learned how to balance my programming and vidya and work.
Prioritize.
>>
>>378864602
I tried exercising 3-4 times a week for 10 months straight. It was great for my mental state but did absolutely nothing for my energy levels, actually probably made me need even more sleep.
>>
>>378864492
Why do you dismiss those stories? Too cliche in your eyes? Plot is too bad? Because everything has already been done before and fun or succesful games have had bad stories before.
>>
learn unity instead and make furry porn games, instant bank
>>
>>378864704
If you want some advice, try smaller scale projects first. Asteroids is a good one. Try Tetris. Try Sokoban. Try a shmup.
These are all relatively simple and easy to find tutorials for.
Now, take one of them and enhance it beyond the scope of the tutorial. If you don't have any ideas, ask people. There's no reason why you should come up with everything yourself. Software development (especially games) is a team effort. Single person development is the exception and not the rule.
>>
>>378865023
this is good advice, but your actual point makes you miss the original idea here- it's easier to find excusem than learn how to make games
>>
>>378863606
Your 23, your a fucking kid.

Also playing vidya is NOT a waste of time. Women are a waste of time
>>
>>378864847
>dude sucked into a portal to a different dimension with monsters oh no how to get back?
It's just Undertale with a different setup.

and I've never even played the game.

>>378864972
If only I could draw

>>378865023
Yeah the thing I've heard is Pong -> Snake -> Asteroids -> Mario -> RPG. I'm like halfway there.
I've never understood the difference between shmup and run n gun. Shmup is something like Strikers 1945 and run n gun is Metal Slug, right?

Then my issue is that I'm literally the weak link, the person organizing it. So you have a good artist and musician but the code monkey flounders.
Plus I should probably get good before I start searching for a team.
>>
>>378865427
That's true for everything that takes effort. I can't give you advice there, I'm sorry. You need to find a way to get motivated.
I know it sounds stupid, but off hours I usually only code when I'm high on dude weed lmao.
You just gotta find a way to motivate yourself to do it. Maybe you're the type of guy that responds to reward/punishment? Maybe you need somebody to check up on you? Find out what it is.
>>378865526
Yeah, strikers 1945 is a shmup. There's also the horizontal variety, like gradius.

When I say team, I don't necessarily mean actual team members. Have you tried asking your friends and family members for ideas for example? Or you know, just people online like this place?
>>
>>378865838
Friends yeah but they want cash as if it'll be a one and done success. Parents aren't those kind of parents and brother is autistic as I am although we shoot the shit sometimes.
People here? What like /wsg/ or /qst/? Also I've heard horror stories from the Steam Friends exchange here. No offense.
>>
>>378865838
>That's true for everything that takes effort. I can't give you advice there,
don't worry, I don't blame you nor expect that you'll help me or something (and I'm not OP)

It's just that some people have this kind of strenght and they keep doing shit even if anyone else gives up. It's pretty rare skill or characteristc, actually, rest of guys ends up in paint factory
>>378863834
(this is my post)

btw this stuff isn't binary, too, but lets not make it more complicated :^)
>>
>>378863606
comparing yourself to other people is so fucking retarded
everyone starts at different places
if you want to compare yourself to someone, imagine your own clone in a parallel universe that was born in the same conditions and brought up the same way
>>
>>378866270
Game dev threads on /v/ (not /vg/) are usually fine.
>>
>>378863606
You've been in college since 2011? Are you working towards a PhD or something?
>>
>>378866693
I see those occasionally at around the 270+ reply mark. Part of me feels like I won't have much luck that far down but I'll try it out. Thanks.
>>
>>378866693
I lurked once, but it doesn't differ from rest of 4chan

(if you made something and it's precious to you, don'\t bring it here mayby :^))
or I'm just oversensitive
>>
>>378866929
Just fuck my math classes up senpai
also community college. As in 2year colleges
>>
Learn to make a 2D space shooter. Then a platformer. Then a more advanced platformer with enemies that have AI. Then RPGs or something. Then maybe a beat 'em up.

Forget the art, the sound, music, everything. Just focus on learning programming for it
>>
>>378867042
>but it doesn't differ from rest of 4chan
Why would it? It's a thread on 4chan after all. The difference is that people usually ask for advice and criticism there, instead of circlejerking over languages and engines (although it does happen sometimes).
>>
>>378867109
Yeah I'm resigned to using mr. placeholder square and his multicolored cousins now.
Also on a different note FL studio is the most over complicated thing I've ever seen in my life desu
>>
>>378867235
I might lurk at bad moment, it was just some usuall chaos and shitstorm and 1 guy who didn't even post single asset has been bitching that "no one from here will ever made it to actuall industry (which I know 100% ofc).
Some guys felt for it.
I closed the page

but again, I might simply don't understand the memes etc. My english doesn't help in such moments, too.
