There is a developer interview where they say their design philosophy is to look at what is the most popular cash cow at the moment, plagiarize the idea, and add the "Blizzard Touch" to it to make it better. Whether you agree or not that the "Blizzard Touch" actually makes it "better," you can't disagree that it leads to successful series. WoW, Diablo 2, Starcraft, and Warcraft 3 (their flagship titles that made them a household name) were ALL designed like this. They have never publicly claimed "WE ARE SO ORIGINAL WE INVENT NEW STUFF ALL THE TIME!!!!"

In fact they have PUBLICLY CLAIMED the opposite, that all they do is steal ideas and refine them.

Anyway, for all the existence of w40k and warhammer there never was one worthwhile game. And blizzard made such good games that their own original universes became even more popular than warhammer. Nobody gives a shit about warhammer today, everybody knows warcraft.
