Steam Direct fee is $100 per game. Too low? Will this mitigate shovelware at all?
>>
The greenlight fee was $100 and that didn't stop people from flooding it with crap.

Now they only want $100 to put a game directly on the store? I'm sure that will end well.
>>
>$100 to publish a game
It's enough to deter people who just wanna dumb their random RPGMaker games that have no substance on Steam, but it's definitely not high enough to deter dedicated abusers. I would've aimed for $1K American honestly. It's a sizable investment you can recoup so long as your game is good/well-advertised, but if your game is nothing, you won't bother.
>>
>>378857994
Greenlight was a one-time fee that covered everything. This is at least per game.

Fuck off Gabe.

As long as they we can refine our criteria to not see them if i don't want to who gives a fuck.
>>
the apple store costs 100 dollars to get on, so no, thats nothing
>>
>>378857640
Is this a fucking joke? I really want to see how Steam drones will defend this.

That post might as well been "Fuck you, we don't even care anymore" instead of a wall of text.
>>
>>378858212
One per account, which made some people team up with "publishing accounts" to release their crap. There was this one guy who "released" like a hundred games a year

2018 is going to be 80% of this graph
>>
>Go to shop
>See two products
>one looks decent and is 20 dollars
>one looks like a pile of shit and is two dollars
>buy two dollar game
>"Reee the shop owner made me buy this piece of shit"
Where does this mindset come from?
>>
>>378858689
>implying anyone would buy a $20 indie game
>>
>>378859032
It isn't indie when it's on sale.
>>
>>378857640
people hoped for something a little more expensive, but we have to take into account another measures for the devs to cash on the market

so it is not just 100$ to scam the market: it is 100$ + checking the game is really getting sold in steam (and not key gifting) + checking the game is really played and not just farmed + ....
>>
$100 in 2017 is practically nothing. Should be like $500, at least.

Yeah, but Greenlight was a premoderation platform. Don't Direct games go directly to Steam?

should be 1k

It should be $10000 per game then you get back $1 for every copy sold (plus the retail price of course) until it hits $10k

>>
>>378859704
Greenlight was 100$ for all games you've submitted, now it's 100$ per game.
>>
>>378860250
yeah but then they had to go through the voting process which could take years, now you can pay 100$ and get your game on steam directly
this doesn't solve shit, if anything now it will be flooded with more garbage.
>>
>>378860656
And if it doesn't work as expected, the price will go up.
>>
>>378860808
I think better voting system and remove early access would be more effective
>>
>>378860018

We have to kill Gary.
>>
>>378860937
What kind of voting system would be "better" tho? Pretty much any system can be abused.
>remove early access
This solves nothing because there have been numerous good EA games through the years who had good EA cycles with steady updates that did everything right. Why punish the people doing things right by killing this system because a few bad apples fuck up?
>>
>>378860018
I think Gary knows something.
>>
>>378860656
The Greenlight screening was already bottom of the barrel in the first place, to the point of some games being literally only played by bots for fake devs to farm cards with. The shovelware that currently makes it way onto the Steam store most definitely does not spend years in limbo beforehand; even if there are games that do, the solution would just be to compensate by submitting even more shovelware, given that there's further fees to act as a limiter.
>>
>>378861461
>no further fees
>>
>>378861225
>>378861429
>Gary

>>
>>378861605

>>
>>378861691
Gary created JB Mod
Garry ripped it off and made Garry's Mod
Garry is the evil one
>>
>>378861314
Because Early Access is a fucking stupid idea, no matter what.
>>
>>378859870
Yeah. There are going to be some extra checks but that's it.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think they should have just kept Greenlight and added all the new features on top of it instead. It wouldn't fix the shovelware problem, but at least it's better than giving false hopes in a TOTALLY NEW AND IMPROVED system that turned out to be fucking nothing.
>>
The important thing is changing the trading card system, not the fee.

Cards are the reason for all the shit that happened
>>
>>378862281
>Hey, wanna Beta Test this product?
>Sure!
>Great, enjoy the buggy mess with so many missing features!
>Ree, why is this such a buggy mess with so many missing features! I expected a full game!!!1!
It's the consumer's fault for being retarded.
>>
>>378862396
>Bought exactly one early access game
>Have complaint about game
>Write a post how it could get fixed
>Dev implements it to days later
But since that's 1 case out of 1000000 ea still is overall shit
>>
>>378860656
The "voting" process wasn't doing shit. It was filled with bots, paying for votes or giving away other shovelware to get votes

See /r/FreeGamesOnSteam. Those morons get through 5-6 steps like:Tweet this,Like this, Vote for this game on greenlight just to get a 60 cents Unity asset flip.
>>
>less games is good
Is this how consolefag mentality works?
>>
>>378860018
>am funy meem man
>buy rust plz
>>
I'm glad they fixed the trading card system. Things were getting out of hand.
>>
>Hey Valve, Greenlight kinda sucks. Could you think of a way to make it better? Like needing a certain Steam account level before voting to curb bots or something?
>Sure senpai
>*Removes people being able to vote on games*

Those people are idiots, but the concept is fucked to begin with. Customers paying the developers for the "privilege" to beta-test their game? That shouldn't be happening.

How is that fixing? What makes it worse for you so people can earn a few cents and buy cheap games that they wanna play?

>We're also going to closely monitor the kinds of game submissions we're receiving

Okay but what the fuck does this mean? They've taken the Greenlight system, which was absolutely being abused, and replaced it with a system which is even EASIER to abuse unless they check game submissions that are coming in. Their solution process seems to be "whoa, everyone was getting really mad, so let's dial it back", but unless they actually curate their fucking system like they should have done with Greenlight in the first place, it's just going to lead to the same abuse. Improving an algorithm for customers to discover games is not a solution to this at all. They've actually made things worse unless they put in the effort to filter out the shit, and they're not saying that they will end up doing that.
>>
>>378863938
Well if it's $100 per game, ideally that goes toward the paycheck of a person spending ten minutes examining it before it gets approved. Ideally. That probably isn't what happens though.
>>
>>378857640
too cheap. make it 5k
>>
>>378858051

>>
>>378863938
I imagine it'll be something like what they talked about in their post on trading card changes.
>>
>>378864185
>$1K is a rich person's money
Nigga, do you live in Zimbabwe or something? $1K American is a decently large sum, but it's not fucking massive. You should put your heart into a good game, so a higher wall to keep you from just shittier out ten shittier games for the same overall cost is important.
And irrelevant if it's $100 or $1000, a rich person wouldn't bat an eye either way, so that's irrelevant.
>>
>>378858490
A bigger fee means the Steam platform will become uncompetitive. A huge fee changes nothing anyway because the platform is already full of shit. Better than GoG aka you can't be on our platform because reasons.
>>
>>378858051
>It's enough to deter people who just wanna dumb their random RPGMaker games

A dumb RPG maker game would definitely make more than $100
>>
I think Steam has more or less said "we don't want to mitigate shovelware", and are instead banking on making it easier for users to just not see it.

You could really simply solve the problem by using the "don't show me games tagged" filter system to keep any and all games off your store with less than, say, 20,000 owners.
>>
>>378864682
>spending time developing a video game
>spending $100 or $1K
>having or earning enough money to live while doing that

don't forget the 100 is recoupable; how mad does that make you?
>>
>>378865618
that's why it should be $500, if it's recoupable, who cares? it'll just stop shitty games that won't even make $500 from entering the market
>>
>>378862396
>Hey, wanna Beta Test this product?
>sure, I love the concept of the game I'm sure that with all the money from early acess and beta testing data it will be released soon right?
