Can you imagine how retarded of an idea it would be these days, if a game company tried selling something like the "Orange Box"
At the time it was cool, but big game DVD packs are dead
>>
>>378850943

Orange Box was fucking insane back in the day
>>
>>378850943
I like how the website hasn't changed at all since 2006: http://orange.half-life2.com/
>>
>>378851208
I know, it fucking made me cum my pants
Now, if I saw something like this, I'd think "What kind of faggot is trying to sell three of their games and calling it the orange box? Just call it the Half Life 2+TF2+Portal pack.
But that was before game packs were a big trend. Now you can download a pack off steam from basically any company. But they're not going to call it an "orange box," and they're definitely not going to sell it on a fucking DVD
>>
>>378850943

To be honest that's correct, 5 games for the price of one. Is there anything that comes close?
>>

>>378851440
I had some friends who bought the Orange box when it FIRST came out.
It actually had Counter Strike: Source instead of Portal.
Which the version I wish I had. Fuck portal.
I mean, portal is cool, but compared to counter strike source? CS:S any day
>>

>3 good games + 2 expansions

i like it. The Orange Box 2: Box Again when?
>>
>>378851579
I like it, too, but it would be the worlds most retarded business decision because you could increase your sales if you just gave it boring ass name, and just sold it on steam.
>>
>>378850943
>>378851415
>>378851672
what the fuck are you rambling on about?
calling it "The Orange Box" is a large aspect to why it worked - as giving it a catchy name like that (which is still recognisable to this day) is what helped it stand out from just a regular game bundle, it was excellent branding and it could be done again from a nostalgic angle (since it's been a decade now since The Orange Box originally released).
>>
>>378851440
>>
>>378852457

It wouldn't be retarded, they'd just have to increase the cost.

I think people forget that Half-Life 2 was three years old by the time The Orange Box came out. You were essentially paying 50 dollars for TF2, the new HL2 episode, and a short two hour game with a novel idea.

Also I guess you're right in that traditional DVD packs are dead, but that's mostly been replaced by Steam packs.
>>

Just shut the fuck up, oh my god, you have no idea how amazing it was to get such a release back in the day. Go play some esports and castrate yourself.

Or, it's possible that TF2 actually did become shitty, as many /v/uckers seem to obsess over

>publishers start killing off physical media on PC

My PC died last year and this is one of the things that's seriously making me reconsider building a new one. This is unquestionably the most retarded shit, especially when the U.S. has dogshit internet speeds for a "first-world country" combined with near monopolies across the nation.

And I see people online defending all this too. I swear they're fucking shills.
>>

>>378854613

>>
>>378855987

>>
>>378854935
>proceed to stop compressing their shit, and now we have games that are fucking 50GB minimum, with some even going up to 100GB after just a few updates
This is because of tech illiteracy among consumers. People that understand why a 50GB game is retarded are a minority within the minority of people that understand what 50GB even means in the first place. The rest think that a larger filesize means a longer game with more content.
Back in 2011, when Sonic Generations had just come out and Skyrim's release was a week away, there were a lot of people on /v/ who thought that Skyrim was going to be a shorter game than Sonic Generations because it was one or two GBs smaller.
>>
>>378854935
Same problem on consoles with huge day-1 patches and physical copies having multiple 50GB updates before you can play it. It's a lose-lose situation no matter what system you choose.
>>
>>378856176
>>378856112
>>378854935
You know, a Terabyte internal HDD costs less than some games... I don't think big game files ever really bothered me
>>
>>378856112

Actually, the technically illiterate people are the ones who don't know much of anything about digital compression, don't know that image compression is pretty much tapped out and it's not going to get much better, don't know that doubling the size of a texture requires roughly four times the memory and think the reason why games have gotten so large in the "HD era" is because "devs can't into compression".
>>
>>378856452
>ignoring the fact you have to download all of that
also, like >>378856112 said, there's no justifiable reason for a game in this day an age to be as large as 50GB.
>>
>>378856487
I wish you were right but the fact is you aren't, people have dug into the files are the biggest culprits for poorly compressed games and found that no attempt was made whatsoever to compress files. You're right that compression is less effective for games with extremely high texture quality, but not to the extent you think.
>>
>>378853231
Pre-ordered that and don't regret it
plus the box is nice
>>
>>378856638
>justifiable reason for a game in this day an age to be as large as 50GB.
Well, imagine working for a game company and feeling the pressure to save money from the higher ups. I guess I would choose to piss off the small minority of my consumers (who are going to buy it anyway) who like small game files due to their slavic internet connection and 20 year old 200 GB IBM harddrives
>>
>>378856765

The only really egregious thing I've ever seen done is the bundling of multiple languages together and you don't really see much of that anymore with digital distribution.

I know people like to complain about light compression done on pre-rendered video clips and audio but that's not like that just to spite you, it's like that for the people out there who have the equipment that can actually take advantage of the extra quality.
>>
>>378850943
I remember getting this around 20 bucks, best deal indeed.
>>
>>378857160
that's a really poor excuse, we're not talking about a few megabytes difference from this decision, we're talking about 50+ gigabytes, even if you have a terabyte HDD (which is the standard currently), that'll fill up fast if every fucking game is higher than 50gigs just because they couldn't be arsed to compress a few files.
>>378857236
then they should separate the uncompressed audio/video for those that specifically want that, or at least have a version to download without that for those with slower internet speeds and/or less available storage.
>>
>>378850943
what?

why?

that was, no joke because it says it on the box, "the best deal in videogame history"

It only makes sense for a single series of game. Like Ass Creed's Ezio collection. Bundling all these random games, especially one that required regular updates, was a stupid idea.
>>
>>378858767
It wasn't as much the DRM as it was a huge resource hog, unstable and slow as shit.

For literally no gain compared to the WON-versions.
>>
>>378859089
I don't think it was stupid at the time because the dev's of Team Fortress 2 really played it by ear (I doubt they planned on where it is today back in '06)
But nowadays, yeah probably very stupid
>>
>>378859207
Let's not forget that while TF2 was highly anticipated, people were wary of the very pixar artstyle it had adopted compared to classic, including certain changes like the removal of grenades. Attaching it to a bundle with another highly anticipated game like Episode 2 gave you a very good reason to pick it up if you were still unsure.

Portal was always the real winner of the pack though. Despite being a small game created by a team of uni students Valve hired it ended up dominating critic reviews and game awards.
>>
>>378859734
I never thought portal was that cool
I loved it, but not enough to buy portal 2. Never gave that much of a shit, honestly
>>
>>378856112

>>378856176
I considered that, but at least on consoles the majority of games still come out with physical copies in the first place to offset the download size. But yeah, you're right that there's still fucking 50GB+ of updates for games now, especially since the industry is on this "games as a service" bullshit.

>>378856452
Storage isn't the problem, HDD's are cheap as fuck nowadays. It's the downloading process that's a huge issue, the majority of people can't afford to download 80GB games with 50GB patches when internet infrastructure in places like the U.S. is ridiculously behind places like Korea and Eastern Europe.

It hinders speeds, and between that and data caps now being a thing it's extremely stupid and not to mention greedy as fuck not to print fucking discs which costs as little as 10 cents. The publishers are already still putting out physical copies on consoles, there's no reason not to do so for PC.

>>378857236
>it's like that for the people out there who have the equipment that can actually take advantage of the extra quality.

Even among the PC userbase, that's a minority of people who utilize higher audio and visual fidelity. The majority of the audience doesn't use that stuff, so there's no reason whatsoever not to make it available as a separate download option besides laziness.
>>
>>378861278
>so there's no reason whatsoever not to make it available as a separate download option besides laziness

It's always laziness for you people, isn't it? When you grow up and get a job you'll discover there's a lot of cost-benefit analysis involved in everything you do. Everything that takes time inherently costs money.

I mean, go look at the Vanquish PC port.

>Amusingly, the it’s the cut-scenes that make up the vast majority of the game’s install size. Out of the total 18.6GB size, only 2.5GB represent actual game files, with the rest all taken up by pre-rendered videos.

what, are you implying that college teaches things about history that you're not allowed to leak on the internet? Did you enter secret roman catacombs that nobody has ever seen before, or (are I say) somebody with an internet connection?
Are you saying that you're accredited to win an argument on 4chan?
Man, go back to college, study science, get a good job, and save your life before you fucking regret it. At least a science degree lets you make money, so you don't live like some cock sucker.

>18.6GB

I mean that's not so bad anymore compared to the other modern shit we have to put up with, and 18gigs is no deal breaker for me, but that's still crazy.

I agree with you on the piracy thing. That and it's the only way to actually own your games anymore, I buy my stuff and pirate as well for back up and a sense of ownership if that makes sense.

A lot of shop websites and stuff actually have it listed as "half life 2: orange box". Like valve call it that internally or something.

>>378866643
teaching is not a career. teaching should be for people working to get their masters or working towards their PhD's and need cash or experience on the side.
Anyone who thinks teaching is a goal is making a mistake

Yeah that's how I feel about teaching too.
The teachers that were doing it as a side project compared to as a main source of income had vastly different methods of teaching that were actually good.

Same goes for college, because professors with Tenure are usually dicks or massive bitches

My favorite teacher in all of my education history was a guy who became a teacher because he wanted to be a good teacher.

He was a farmer who got bored when he was in his late 40s, went and got some degrees and became an English teacher. We probably spent 10 percent of his class doing English stuff, the other 90 was talking about life and current events. He gifted me a copy of Hocus Pocus by Kurt Vonnegut, which is a very good book by a very good author, and really opened a whole literary world I didn't really know about prior to his 10th grade English class.

Thanks, Mr. Ames. You were the shit.

He didn't complain at all. He was an old school beatnik liberal, but he wasn't pushy or annoying about it. He was genuinely just a super great guy who asked thought provoking questions and admired how we as his students reached different conclusions.

>Leisure and Idleness. There is something of the American Indian, something of the ferocity peculiar to Indian blood, in the American lust for gold - and the breathless haste with which they work - the distinctive vice of the New World - is already beginning to infect Old Europe with its ferocity and is spreading a lack of spirituality like a blanket. Even now one is ashamed of resting and prolonged reflection almost gives people a bad conscience. One thinks with a watch in one’s hand even as one eats one’s lunch whilst reading the latest news of the stock market, one lives as one might always "miss out on something". "Rather do anything rather than nothing" : this principle too is just a noose to throttle all culture and good taste. Just as all forms are visibly perishing by the haste of the workers, the feeling for form itself, the ear and eye for the melody of movements are also perishing. The proof of this may be found in the universal demand for gross obviousness in all those situations in which human beings wish to be honest with one another for once - in their associations with friends, women, relatives, children, teachers, pupils, leaders and Princes : One no longer has time or energy for ceremonies, for being obliging in an indirect way, for esprit in conversation, and for otium at all. Living in a constant chase after gain compels people to expend their spirit to the point of exhaustion in continual pretence and overreaching and anticipating others. Virtue has come to consist in doing something in a shorter time than another person. And so there are only rare hours of sincere intercourse permitted: in them, however, people are tired, and would not only like "to let themselves go," but to stretch their legs out wide in awkward style.

No, it's actually about avoiding mistakes and stupidity, and wanting a stable life. Having back up money to help your family in hard times or being able to travel the world and meet people across the planet is actually amazing, you cock.

>The way people write their letters nowadays is quite in keeping with the age; their style and spirit will always be the true "sign of the times." If there be still enjoyment in society and in art, it is enjoyment such as over worked slaves provide for themselves. Oh, this moderation in "joy" of our cultured and uncultured classes! Oh, this increasing suspiciousness of all enjoyment! Work is winning over more and more the good conscience to its side: the desire for enjoyment already calls itself "need of recreation," and even begins to be ashamed of itself. "One owes it to one's health," people say, when they are caught at a picnic. Indeed, it might soon go so far that one could not yield to the desire for the vita contemplative, (that is to say, excursions with thoughts and friends), without self contempt and a bad conscience. Well! Formerly it was the very reverse: it was "action" that suffered from a bad conscience. A man of good family concealed his work when need compelled him to labour. The slave laboured under the weight of the feeling that he did something contemptible: the "doing" itself was something contemptible. "Only in otium and bellum is there nobility and honour:" so rang the voice of ancient prejudice!

Nope. I still refuse to buy digitally.
Only game I will be buying in the foreseeable future is Cyberpunk 2077 since CDPR releases their games physically and DRM free.
When you buy digitally you are getting literally NOTHING in return.

Not really, I'm not going to be corporate cocksucker that gives money to devs for literally nothing. They can either release physically or I can continue to pirate.
I'm not complaining though, I have saved myself thousands of dollars not paying for digital games.

That's kinda hard to do nowadays, at least in the states.

You could just
>buy game on steam/origin/whateverthefuck
>then pirate the game as soon as it's cracked to actually own a copy
>or just wait till the game's cracked and then buy it and pirate a copy

Either way, Blu-Rays should have taken off on PC, but we can thank Microsoft for that.

Why would I give money to developers that won't release their game physically? I don't give a shit about "supporting the industry" if they are extremely anti-consumer by not releasing their games physically.

You have a point here and I even agree with it, but I make an exception to things like Japanese publishers putting out a good PC port, indie games, and generally smaller games.

Western AAA-stuff I don't take that shit from.
