What degree should I aim for if I want to develop video games in the future?
>>
Medicine, so people who make games can live longer
>>
You don't really need any specific degree unless you want to be some minor cog in a 1000 man team working for Ubisoft or EA or some shitty job like that.

Having made a game and having sold a game is going to get you a job in a way no degree or minor industry experience will. If you can point to X indie game on steam that sold 10,000 copies and say I made that, basically anyone will hire you.

Saying I have a computer science degree with experience with C++ and Java and I worked as a tester for Activision for 3 years will get you laughed out of the building.
>>
>>378844163
Probably CS if you're really dead set on a degree, but the best way to learn to make videogames is to make videogames. Any sort of CS or math you don't know youll learn along the way as you encounter obstacles requiring those skills.

>>378844163
>artfags trying to make their "how do you feel about this, what feelings does it invoke in you" bullshit more important and useful than it really is
>>
Don't unless you want to be an expendable code/art/write/etc monkey. If you actually want a career you need to start making things now. Portfolio uber alles.
>>
But if you can make games from scratch why would you want to be hired then?
>>
>>378844163
Computer Science, IT is also acceptable if you want to work for a company doing MMOs or hosts their own multiplayer servers.
>>
>>378845261
>Make a regular monthly salary + employer benefits regardless if the game sells or not
vs
>Work for five years straight making a game and hope when it hits steam people actually buy it so I can make some money and not starve

If you're a 23 year old virgin living with your parents the idea of working for yourself is a lot more enticing than if you're 32, having a wife and kids, two cars, a mortgage, insurance, bills, and taxes to pay.

Video games seems like a bad field to pursue this kind of life though.

I'd say that doing what you dreamt of doing for living more often than not kills the passion for it. Better learn to do something that pays off well and make vidya as hobby.
>>
>>378845823
>Video games seems like a bad field to pursue this kind of life though.
Only if you're a lone wolf working for yourself.
>>
>>378844163
make an indie game/join an indie dev

otherwise you're going to get fired once they release a game with any big game company, not sustainable or secure
>>
>>378845979
And if you're working for a large company you end up doing things that seem quite trivial in the long run and the work of passion gradually devolves into regular job for living.
>>
>>378846106
What does that have to do with anything?

if you actually want to make games there are a shit load of online tutorials for basic languages out there that are far superior to univeristy classes... then, you need to use those skills to try to emulate something about a favorite game of yours... so like, if you're an RTS fan try to make a basic version of WC2, no matter how shit it is. try to copy it like 1:1. you'll start to see limitations in how you think, then you can allocate your subsequent learning to those areas so that you're not a deficient coder/thinker when it comes to programming in a holistic sense.

video game "education" is a meme and is really only there to instill SJW ideas into people too lazy to do what i stated above. being an indie dev is REALLY the only way to make actual games anymore.

Good artists are generally in higher demand than engineers now that most jobs are outsourced to india. Better pay, and more job security. Just admit it anon, you chose the wrong path.

Is computer science really a meme degree?

I chose it basically to make money and I don't hate it, but so many people go on about how every day is difficult but "rewarding" and how they spend every waking moment of the day studying up on new technologies. I don't have time for that shit.

Computer Science.
Pretty much every successful studio demands a CS degree
>>
> Be young idiot.

> Country has 0 jobs. Foreign countries would rather outsource than bring people in.

So, anyway, I'm studying Mechanical Engineering now and making 3D models on the side to sell.

Video game art seemed like a useless degree whilst I was studying it. There was nothing which couldn't be self-taught, and all being computer based, there were no specialist equipment which could only be found in the university.

The few lessons I had on classical art had us working with live models, a published artist and a bunch of other shit.

Our "Game" lessons were with a fat guy who read 3DS Max Tutorials to us.

Not at all, what most developers want is experience in making games. A portfolio of your work will get you a job not a degree. They don't care what degree you have so long as you can make games and you can show you can make games by having done it in the past.

A CS degree will only help if you don't want to make anything and you're satisfied with low level grunt work and staying there your whole life. If you're trying to get into the video game industry do not waste your time/money on a CS degree.

Face the reality faggot.

You are not learing C++, Art shit, or Maths and Physics because "Mhu videogames", you are just compensating the fact that you will never do your own game, since you are garbage low tier dingu dongo man or trap.

I'm sorry for you, but let it go.
If you have more than 18 years old, and still at UNI, with ZERO games in you portfolio, you better aiming to another profession an stay in peace with you "gaming hobby".

Just be an Engineer, a Doctor or an Astronaut, for fuck sake.

If you really wants to work in the Game Industry, start working on your fucking game, you dipshit.
