People who haven't played Zestiria in a while recall certain parts of it and start thinking those parts are representative of the whole. It's quite the opposite. I turned down my "JRPGs intake" quite a lot in the last years, because of... well let's call it oversaturation.
The genre in itself is pretty samey over all it's titles with only very few really shining.
Also its main demographic lies somewhere between 10-25.
So the older you get and the more JRPGs you played the harder it is to find one that doesn't feel like a mix between 10 formally existing titles that uses tropes you grew out of years ago.

Really? Okay. Let's start with Graces f in 2012 because that's when Tales games started being localized at a solid rate and pace.

Xenoblade or Persona 4 Golden are both significantly better experiences than Graces. Tales of the Abyss' 3DS port is nice but it's just a port.

Tales of Xillia as compared to SMT: Soul Hackers, SMT4, Project X Zone, FE:Awakening. Admittedly none of those are standouts and one is a really old port but fuck if they aren't all better than Xillia.

Tales of Hearts R and Xillia 2, as well as Symphonia's HD port. To be fair I think Tales as a series takes this one, thanks to number of releases and a lack of stupid decisions. Xillia 2 improves on 1 in every imaginable way (despite valid complaints about most assets being reused from1), Tales of Hearts R is legitimately great, and while the Symphonia HD port isn't that great a port it's still a good release. The only real competition this year in the genre being FF, though, it's not really a surprise Tales comes out on top. Persona Q also came out in 2014 but it sucked so whatever.

Zestiria sucked dick and pretty much every JRPG that came out that year shits all over it, but Xenoblade X in particular is fantastic, especially in the exploration department which is one of the worst things about Zestiria.

This is just off the top of my head and I'm not including Berseria because I have yet to play it.

Look, I'm not a big fan of FE in general and even less of a fan of Awakening specifically, but at least it was a complete game. Xillia 1 was nowhere near what it was clearly supposed to be. Regardless I like the series a lot, I just think every game since Graces (including Graces) has been a step in the wrong direction. I found it worse for several reasons.

Regardless of the fact that the circumstances surrounding the games' rushed development were similar, Zestiria was less enjoyable than Xillia 1 as a whole. Obviously this is completely subjective but I've seen enough people who share this opinion to find it worth mentioning.
Secondly, Zestiria was trying to introduce or refresh mechanics that simply did not work, while Xillia really just felt like a stale mishmash of elements from previous games. Zestiria would get points for trying something new but everything new it tried was stupid as fuck and shouldn't have even made it to the drawing board.

From what I heard the new mechanic was giving the devleoper trouble which is why it's so so clunkly. Beseria's gameplay is the same as Zestiria's just with no armatus and more dev time.

What that means is that the game actually doesn't deserve the autistic sperging aimed at it. Graces, Dawn of the new World, and even Tempest has it fans.

Like I said before Zestiria shares the same problems as Xillia, and that's a problem that the Tales Studio has in general. I've said it before in other threads but their problem is the fact that Tales studio is too focused on releasing a game, rather than releasing a complete game. That and flooding the market with Tales games is a practice that Bamco needs to grow out of.

So what in your eyes would have made him better? He was a book smart drone with no real knowledge about the world at the start that gradually learned a great deal overthe course of his journey. It's pretty straight forward.
