A great, truly fun game, which truly revolutionized the series, the genre, and even the fucking industry back in the days. You can still kinda call it a "survival horror", but the pacing is quite different.

Everyone was in love with the free-aim and quick-knife back in the days, and were expecting to get a zombie game with such controls next. It never happened. The sequels get worse and worse, though RE5 is still worth it for the saga's sort-of finale, and brilliant co-op. It's quite shit alone tho'.

It's both though.
Obviously it won't FEEL revolutionary anymore, as the formulas it coined have been copied numerous times afterwards. Games like GoW, Uncharted, TLOU... all have their roots in RE4, even if they all streamline the core game play a bit

Buy the weapons as they come (TMP, Shotgun, Rifle) bc their ammo will begin spawning.

Dont worry too much about upgrading your first shotgun bc youll get a better one

Take dramamine bc youll get dizzy

Feels different to play; it's essentially a different game. But it's not a bad game, so be open minded.

What did you think of the first 3 OP?
I've just finished RE2 and RE3 is in the mail, I've played REmake last month and loved them both
I played RE4 for my first time probably 2 months ago after playing the series in reverse
(RE6, then 5 with a friend, then 4)
It's the best of the three 'shooter REs' I would say, the characters are good fun, the bosses are memorable and interesting and the combat is engaging with some tricky areas and tense moments when the zombies do begin stacking up.

The first 2 games are a lot slower and more survival horror (much less ammo and health), however, I feel 4 makes up for it with the new gameplay, it's a romp the entire way through.
